You wasn't getting any traffic at position #19 so it's not like you lost any traffic dropping down to #273.

Google are punishing smes, it drives them to Adwords which generate 70% of their revenue, unclear whether it is malicious or not, but who cares, the effect is the same regardless. We do it differently but we use hosting solutions scaled from the same architecture that the big companies use (Vogue, FT, Saks, Net-A-Porter), it bypasses up to 95% of the seo problems the smes see - but it costs, doesn't it always. Welcome to the new world of revenue generation for the corporates.

It is not google dance, you either got penalized or the links that got you there are lost. Most likely the former. Did you get any messages in your WMT ?

@mkgg - "@serpyre: This is a discussion for another thread but since you seem to be posting the same advice over and over and promoting how you do things. Do you have any proof using same hosting solution as big name brands helps with rankings ? I refuse to believe that. You are also forgetting that such big brands have THEIR OWN servers and there is NO WAY you can get on the same ones. How the heck do you achieve that feat ?"

We just realised today the reason no-one here has ever heard of Technical SEO, you need to be know how Large Enterprises architectures work –and- have revenues in the $millions -and- have experience in low end solutions such as WordPress & Magento. We’re not promoting, just trying to show there is another way to do it, but we now understand (as of today) that it doesn’t make any sense and probably never will. Tech SEO is 5-10x faster, needs 5-10x less resource but costs 5-10x more with better risk mitigation – the opposite of Business SEO which is what all the SMEs use.

Proof, how about Large Enterprise architects (SAP etc) who designed the architectures for $100s million projects for companies like Shell and scaled their knowledge down to WordPress & Magento. Long story. They ranked a brand new test site with 30,000 products next to Amazon, eBay, Net-A-Porter (their reference site), and ShopStyle (another reference site) with zero marketing and zero ppc within a few weeks – it was to test the architecture. They reduced the hosting clusters ($2,100/mth) to 50% and the rankings dropped off from first page, put them back to normal and the rankings came back to first page within a week or so.

They are building out multiple sites with the architecture to compete directly against Net-A-Porter (fashion sourcing is a slow process) and data loading a 1mil+ product site to go against ShopStyle. The reason they are not released it that it is hard to find reliable resources to understand how to run them – they need 5-10x less staff than the competitors so you need someone who has some understanding of all parts of the supply chain. Almost all resources only have knowledge of one or two parts, so miss the other eight or so to be able to make decisions – so they are deciding whether to just run them themselves.

For the hosting, well that is primarily due to the architects using Tier 1/2 providers which the big companies use. It turns out that no-one here will have access to that level of architecture with lower cost than say the Nexcess (who are Tier 3/4 so lower Technical SEO) and with the support services platform to reduce employee workload by 5-10x (eCommerce & Affiliate sites primarily for data onboarding and dynamic international pricing calcs). Tier 1/2 providers are slower, cost more but have the highest Tech SEO – all SME sites will use Tier 7 (Siteground – non-existant Tech SEO) or Tier 5/6 (specialist solution hosts who market for speed with limited Tech SEO). They designed an architecture that has Tier 1/2 Tech SEO, Tier 5/6 performance, and Tier 3/4 & 5/6 cost.

So you will say that’s not proof, look at all the pr0 pages that the enterprise companies have from eBay to Amazon which rank first page. True eBay have supposedly 2billion backlinks, but, and this is the key point, you can get to 95% of what they can do with just Tech SEO – you do however always need Business SEO to get in to the 5% which is where 50% of all revenue is generated.

What’s the point of all this, now everyone knows what they are playing against – one thing the architects told us (these guys have chargeouts of $1,000s per day and play at Google, Saks, Net-A-Porter levels) – it will get worse. There is a move to ‘fat tails’ – very large enterprise with trust and very niche sites with trust –we are told Google started the shift in 2010/11, it takes 3yrs to filter down to the mass market (SMEs) which is basically now – the beneficiaries – ppc networks, co-incidence – who knows.

We’ve been trying to get them to release the solutions to SMEs, which they did via ourselves, and we found absolutely no understanding of how it works or what the benefits are. Basically your comments are pretty much the standard response. So we decided to get out and look towards setting up a digital music site on the platform instead – although on the equity share model, can’t afford the $6k/mth for the full sme architecture.

Next time someone bangs their head against the wall because a site was delisted or thier pages dropped of the first page while increasing Business SEO giving Google their life story so they can drive you to Adwords where they make 70% of their revenue, just remember what Trump said, it’s business, nothing personal.

We'll simplify it, if you are sitting next to Brad Pitt or Clooney and look reasonable and don't do or say anything too stupid or give too much information, people will think you are important. If you are Joe Bloggs at a cafe sitting next to Jane Doe, no-one is interested.

So if you are a site sitting next to Saks or Net-A-Porter and have 10s thousands of products and look reasonably crisp with good performance (1-2s dynamic page loads) and don't tell them too much about yourself, Google will want to get to know you. If you are a WordPress site with a few hundred to thousand products on GoDaddy hosting, they couldn't care less.

Computers are only as good as the programmers, the programmers are human and follow human nature. That is Googles algorithm, if you understand human nature you understand how to rank your site, be it using Technical SEO or Business SEO - "Is it better to be feared or respected? I say, is it too much to ask for both?". The higher you go up in business, the more they understand how it all fits together and the better the results with less effort.

We shut down our site due to the understanding issues we mentioned - education is a seriously slow process and not really our thing – we tried – it didn’t work out. The consultants are pretty happy to skip SMEs as well - although they keep at open eye towards startups – they have more drive and more open minds. Hopefully this information will help someone to stay sane when Google throws its weight around.
