Duplicate content for similar written languages

I have a question about duplicate content regarding similar reading languages. One of my sites is aimed for the Portuguese language but there are some minor but noticeable difference between Portuguese for Portugal and Portuguese for Brazil. To a native reader these differences are very obvious but to google the pages would look 95% similar and with about 20-30 pages for each side there could appear to be lots of duplicate content. I was going to use the language tag in the header (pt-br and pt) just wondering if anyone had any experience or insights. Thanks for your time.
