Thanks Bill for all your help! Contacted hostgator and apparently I was using the wrong username and password for the website, lol. I knew it was something stupid on my end :)

Thanks for the reply!

Installed notepad++ and copied the text into there and saved it as a php document. I'm still getting the 404 error however. Any idea what else could be the cause? Thanks.

Thanks all for the quick replies! based on what I've read, If I can't find a higher search volume keyword I'll give it a go. I suppose the worst that can happen is i lose 10 bucks and several hours...
