Otherwise, I suggest putting a responsive vertical ad in the right column and get rid of the popup...

It depends on the topic and what you want to accomplish. Some articles are short because everything can be said in a small amount of space.

Getting quality links is easier said than done.

Anyone who has a highly ranked page and knows what they are doing will be reluctant to put an external link on it unless there is a very good reason.

Ezine is still the best. Yes, it lost traffic, but a lot of the traffic was lost for low-quality articles. If you focus on quality, you should still see results.
