Try focusing on bigger sites with valuable content - I've seen so many garbage micro-niche sites lately I knew it was only a matter of time before google dropped the ban hammer on them...

Social bookmarking is alright... it will give you backlinks but they don't nearly have as much power as they once held... however I use them more now for getting new content indexed quickly.
