How to get a post to go viral.

There's a blogger over here in Australia who wrote regular blogs and had a small following (a couple of thousand people) and one day she wrote a blog post which she published on her social media which then went VIRAL. Within a matter of hours, she was one of the most talked about women in Aus. No more than six months later shes written a book and shes now on a world tour. I wont name her but any Aussies in the forum probably know who I'm talking about.

So creating a viral post obviously seems like the quick solution to get my brand in front of the right people. It doesn't have to be a blog, but any social post has the ability to go viral so here are a two things I've picked up on how to make that happen.

Make content shareable:
Seems obvious but if you can get people to share your post on social media this then becomes visible on their friends timelines and so on and so forth once it gathers some traction it wont be too long before your content is seen all over the world.
While many people are over-sharers (and you've probably blocked them from your news feed for that very reason!) in general people share for two reasons to entertain their friends, or because the content is conducive to a shared experience they've had with others.
So keep your posts educational promoting your product or service, a life lesson, or anything else that the majority are likely to find useful. And then try and make it entertaining to boot - I always take this to mean funny and with humour which will appeal to a large target market.

Be controversial:
This is a common way that people go viral but probably not one that I'm comfortable with myself. The reason it won't work for me at this stage is because I want my business to be portrayed in a positive light by everyone (as much as possible) and if I've divided half of the population that's a risky stat to me. But it is the controversy that wreaks havoc in the social media playground so its recommended if you want to stir up a bit of a reaction.

Has anyone got any other tips on how to produce content that could go viral? Or is it all down to luck of the draw?

      So true!
I've never (knowingly) seen anything go viral that wasn't genuine and authentic. Thanks for your input!

There are heaps of tips out there for going viral, some work some don't.

Here are a few to add to your list:

    Get personal

Strong engagement comes from personalisation - talks about things that are personal to you and something they can relate to. Some of the mummybloggers out there such as Sophie Cachia have incredible followings (200,000+) and they are talking about really, really mundane stuff. Check her out http://theyoungmummy.com.au/ or even Constance Hall is another good one - http://queensofconstance.com/ both are in the media all the time and are getting huge amounts of publicity by just being normal and sharing personal stories.

    Use imagery

Everyone loves to see what your real life is like and adding imagery helps with the visualisation. Whether it is a bad hair day or a real behind the scenes look, imagery is an amazing way to go viral and you can share it across a wide range of social media channels too.

Get influencers to share you posts

Whether you encourage people that are followers or influencers, get them to share and share - this is a huge help in getting viral attention and you will soon see your reach snowball.

Figure out the best time to post

Whether you're targeting a local audience or you are trying to break into bigger markets - figure out the best time and set an alarm clock to do this. Or better yet schedule it on your blog. Plenty of analytics tools will help you with this.

    Promote yourself

Advertising works big time or set up a cross promotion with other bloggers or well known instagram accounts. By cross promoting with someone who is targeting the same audience you will get more bang for your buck.

social network. it will never go viral if no-one knows it exists. obtain a facebook, and twitter for that website, have different content on each page, both linking posts back to your website. look for other websites or pages inside the same genre, and do link or like exchange. I dont see any like/share links on your own page either. The meaning of going viral is the fact that people just like your stuff a whole lot they share it with everyone they know. You will be not which makes it very easy to share this. 9 times away from 10, a lot of people are not going to go out of their strategy to share something. you must allow it to be easy for them to do.

end up in the pinnacle of the potential audience. what do they want to see? what will likely be fresh and new vs old and boring?

The key to create viral posts, is to create content without the intent of making it "go viral".

Only the most thoughtless of writings are the best ones. And this is not something I am making up myself...

That's what Stephen king said, and that's what I read Garry sayin..

    Thanks

To help your posts to go viral, try following tricks:
    1. You have to got personal. Consider the strong engagement you receive from Facebook friends when you share new post on your Facebook wall.
    2. Personalizing the updates on your business page will have a similar effect.
    3. Timing is everything. Take care of timings while sharing a new post.

This is a really interesting post and to be honest with you, I don't think you can get something to go viral. Otherwise everyone would be doing it.
For a post to hit the sweet spot of the whole population it needs to do a few things, none of which you can plan for, but here are a couple of ideas I have:
    1) Relate to the average Joe.
The things that are shared amongst friends and family are the popular ones. Something that strikes a chord with a wide group of people. Posts are shared because they create either humour or empathy so you want something that a lot of people can tag their friends and say 'this is you' or 'this is what we were talking about' I don't think you can really plan that, I think you have to carry on writing your blog as you were and wait for it to resonate.

    2) Be emotional.
You've already mentioned it but it's a great point. Something that tugs at the heart strings of the population is guaranteed to cause a reaction. Sad, happy, anger...all feelings which encourage people to share and look to their friends for emotional togetherness.

    3) Relate to the real people.
People don't always want to know about you and what you sell. The most popular posts are often about nothing more exciting than the weather, politics, or something else that's going on in the news. Don't get stuck in the mindset that everything has to relate directly to your business to be popular, it doesn't. That being said; if you do create a post that suddenly goes viral, make sure your images have your logo on them - there'd be nothing worse than having your content in front of millions of people but none of them having a clue who you are!!

Great post and good food for thought, thanks for sharing!

Do-able forms of content that have a chance of going viral are lists & infographics. Everyone can do lists right? Easy-to-use infographic tools are also available online. As for the content of that list, appeal to people's narcissistic side/desire to look good. Your content has to make them look smart or good for sharing. This means doing more in-depth research and sharing "uncommon info" or something really new.

All of the posts that I've seen 'go viral' go with your initial controversy theme. They've divided the world, not necessarily in a bad way - remember the blue and gold dress phenomenon? I guess you're looking for something that people can debate on until they're blue (or gold!) in the face.

When you want your post to go viral, the first thing you do is to maximize the time allotted in your video or in your post. Make it short but meaningful. Majority of the viral posts are short and has a range of 30 seconds to one minute. People or the viewers tends to get their attention in short viral post; so make it easy for the viewers to scan the content such as images, photos, and the subheadings.

If you have an expert knowledge and interesting topic. Mostly, people want and expect content they can discuss, and they want to make it sensible. Don't make your viewers foolish. They are going to share your post if they know or they can put themselves into it, they can relate to your post or what the content is all about. Make a great impression on your post.

One thing for a post to go viral, make sure that your post is also appropriate. Don't use slang words, use a proper grammar and punctuation and make sure that the viewers can easily get what you want to point to in your post. The shorter the post is the better to your viewer. Nothing is more annoying than large, lenghty and long paragraph posts.

I sort of disagree for a couple of reasons:

      1) Slang is OK your target market are slang-users! A bunch of teenagers who have grown up with acronyms and hashtags aren't going to be won over by proper grammar, fact.

      2) If you're trying to sell a fundraising campaign or a new product, long posts tell a necessary story. There's nothing wrong with long if it's concise and interesting.

How to get a post to go viral? Simple. Let your viewers or readers comment. You need to respond to the comments that are on your posts. You need to answer politely and in a proper way. If the viewer/s gave you a good comment and relevant to your topic, a good community will always comment in what you are posting and will increase your chance to be viral.
