TikTok joins Instagram and Snapchat in blatantly ripping off BeReal features

A new article on Social Media Today reports that TikTok has announced a new feature called 'TikTok Now', which will prompt users to share a selfie, using the front and back camera, at a random time each day.

"Making possible deeper connection and entertainment in a fun format, TikTok Now invites you and your friends to capture what you're doing in the moment using your device's front and back camera. You'll receive a daily prompt to capture a 10-second video or a static photo to easily share what you're up to."
Sound familiar?

The feature is basically a direct rip-off of BeReal, whose rapid growth and rising popularity has already seen its key elements replicated by Instagram and Snapchat as well. And now, TikTok's getting in on the same, with the feature being given a new tab in the app, and even a new, separate app in some regions outside the US.

It'll be interesting to see whether TikTok Now catches on in either form. This is particularly relevant in the case of TikTok, because unlike other social networks, TikTok has framed itself as 'an entertainment app', due to its focus on highlighting the best content from across the platform, as opposed to users curating their experience via their own friend and interest segments.

What's your opinion?

Will it work? Will TikTok users enjoy having BeReal in the app that they're already using?

As every social media platform to use the last feature has a prize in terms of boosting the organic reach, marketers, and influencers know this and they will probably take advantage of it

TikTok offers great effects and features, properly understanding today's youth trends.

  • If TikTok wants to stay relevant, it makes sense that they'd try to rip off competitors as much as they can and as early as they can. The question is how they will make it work so that people would rather use that feature in TikTok than in BeReal.

I must be weird - I honestly do not understand why I would WANT people to see me coming and going....or why it's necessary or fun to post or posture for strangers 'online'....or why anyone is interested in watching strangers doing those things.

If everyone were like me, social media would have been a bust....clearly, I'm an outlier.
