SEO is very hot, attractive and paying field and on other side web design also is a good field. Both also have saturation. Better you decide keeping in mind your own temperament. If you like designing come towards web designing and if marketing attracts you more, opt for SEO.
    If you have your own website, and asking which one is more important then let me tell you that SEO is very very important, but this step would come after you design your website. SEO is the main strategy used to bring website to live and driving organic traffic towards it and design also has important role in SEO.

    Well this comparison is irrelevant because for a successful SEO campaigning a good website is pertinent. and vice versa. Website structure and its design character matters a lot in traffic building and decreasing the outflow. On the other hand if you want to get free leads you should go for SEO. which is dominating the Marketing industry.

    In my experience, the two go hand-in-hand. Google makes clear enough the best practices for site structure, speed, labeling and content. The challenge I find is that designers hate words and language on site and SEO loves it - the trick is to find the balance and involve your internet marketers with your design team from the start.
