Hey guys

I'm currently looking for the most comprehensive wordpress design course.
All I can find is tutorials on blogs.

I'm looking for a complete course which includes learning how to design wordpress sites with the use of css, php etc...

Anyone know of such a course?

Regards,
L

You need the php book from sitepoint. www.sitepoint.com this is not an affiliate link - They do however publish the best books on html, css, php and most other things

It is very comprehensive plus you can hook up with other writers and programmers in thier forum

The best "guide" in my opinion is to dive into it and learn what everything does by playing with the code - that's how I learned to deal with and create Wordpress themes. Start with the default theme, it has all the basics and they put comments throughout the code so you know what is what. Once you understand the basics, the "advanced" stuff isn't so advanced...

Rather than totally mess your website up to test and play, install Wordpress locally - there's a guide here.

If you actually want to learn PHP and CSS so you can code 100% on your own, check out Sitepoint.

    Best of luck!

I think I miscommunicated my question. I'm not a newcomer to wordpress. I can play around with the code and customize sites to a very good degree. But I'm looking to learn how to create fantastic looking wordpress themes. I think the main thing I want to learn is how to take a photshop design and convert it to wordpress on my own.

Unfortunately, It didn't seem like too many WP developers on the forum were eager to chime in, so here is my prime shortlist.

      1. Hands down, probably the best live and recorded Wordpress developer tutorials/ courses on the web:Web Design University.Com- This site is operated by the guys over at IThemes (of the Builder Theme, Backup Buddy, Plugin Buddy and Loop Buddy fame.) This course/membership, by most people's standards, is expensive ($397.00 a year) but worth absolutely every penny. If you are a serious Wordpress developer or site designer, you need to look no further. If you have ever thought about doing something unique or unusual with Wordpress, these guys have probably already done it. (By the way, they currently have at least two courses on Photoshop to Wordpress) Also great courses and resources on Wordpress related CSS and PHP.

      2.
CSS, PHP, and any software specific training (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc.)
      A. Lynda.com - One of my favorite sites. Great Dreamweaver CS5 and Wordpress Integration tutorial.
      B. VTC Software Training - Another great training site. Similar to Lynda.com.
      C. ThinkVitamin.com - Awesome business, developer and software courses.
D.TutsPlus.com - Part of the "Envato Family" (Theme Forest, Code Canyon, Video Hive) Great project and design specific tutorials.

These sites all promote various monthly and yearly memberships so you never have to pay for more than you really need. ($19.95 - $49.00 a month relative to the site and membership level.)

      3. Books: (Must Haves)
      A. Rockstar Wordpress Designer 1 and 2 - Great design and reference guides.
      B. Digging Into Wordpress - Another great in-depth reference guide. I have used this book extensively to help me understand the use and design of custom post types and taxonomies.

There are also many other great books and courses from Site Point, Peachtree, and others, just to name a few.

If I were starting over from scratch and wanted to become a Web (Wordpress) Developer and learn a range of skills, from beginner to highly advanced, the list above would make up 95% of my education.

      I hope this helps.................

OMG people look at the date of the last post before you reply to a thread. The OP would certainly have found their answer by now.

For those of you complaining about the thread date (age) you might want to search Google for Wordpress Design Courses (This thread currently comes up as #2 as of 9/25/2011)

I had a number of people ask why the thread is not updated so I posted a little more current information. If you don't like where this information is at, either copy it or move the thread all together......

    (I know it's a revived old thread... but couldn't resist )

But I'm looking to learn how to create fantastic looking wordpress themes.
My suggestion: start to learn praying so that you get "fantastic talent" from above! No technical knowledge can replace that.
