I have all the software, photoshop, gimp etc, and a host of stock images, but I don't get how to use photoshop to create things like eBook and CD covers.

Is there a special way to get this done?
Cheers, and thanks for the help.
Nathan.

You need to buy some action scripts to generate the covers.

I use these ones: eCover Go - Online eCover and Graphic Generator

but there are plenty of others around to choose from too.

Yes this is the best as far as I know and he should definately get what he is asking for it. Even though I would like to have it a lower price myself

The quality of his blows away the competition for sure............

Anyone know where to learn how to actually design these from the ground up, not just use a action script but design one...........

Hello, guys I'm new here. I have to say cover action pro is the BEST i run my own digital cover design firm using CAP 2.0, yes it is a bit much but worth every penny,

ADDED: Ecover Suite Elite is the second best actions scripts I have used, I manly use the dvd cases and some of the hardback and paperback ones

I don't think so. I may be wrong, but I've not encountered any at least anyway.

But, you could try this: eCover Go - Online eCover and Graphic Generator

It's an online generator and you can upload your own artwork. I would assume you could then make your artwork with GIMP and then use it with that generator.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1427353].message }}
  • Designing an ebook isn't something that can be explained on a forum post. If you use a generator, it's probably going to look pretty crappy and unpro. Look at some basic design tutorials on the web and learn how to create. www.psdtuts.com is good.

The generator isn't to design the ebook artwork. It's to take the 2D artwork and render it into a three dimensional image of a book or other cover shape.

If you try to do that part without some kind of 3D image generator you'll be at it for a long long long time.

The best stand-alone program I'ved used is TrueBoxShot. It may not be as good as a PhotoShop script, but probably is the closest you will get.
I think it produces great results for this type of program. The only drawback is it does'nt have a Spiral template.

    Hopefully they will add that.

I can tell you that your best bet, hands down, will be Cover Action Pro 2.0 by Mark. The amount of templates and designs that he provies is ultimately the best for Photoshop. It's made me easily 10x+ than the cost of the software alone.

I know this might not be the best answer or nothing, but you could use Gimp's perspective tool pretty easily to create an e-box. I don't use photoshop, so I wouldn't know of anything for that.

One of the quickest ways to teach yourself how to use Photoshop andor GIMP is to go onto youtube as there are a tone of great tutorials.
Get to know the basics of these programs and get to know the work space area and different tools. Once you get to grips with what each tools os used for, you'll be designing everything from ebook covers, web graphics and no doubt mini site templates etc.

Photoshop does have a bit of a long learning curve, but it is worth it in the end.

Go with Cover Action Pro 2.0, the realism and quality are well worth the price *10.

The only potential downside is the size of the templates, if you want to add images to your box design it can be a pain finding one big enough to use without sacrificing quality.

One of the best ebook cover style photoshop actions pack around at the moment is eCoverSuiteElite. These guy's seem to have kept themselves quite underground, but they're what I use and they're absolutely faultless. (Currently more affordable that CoverActionPro too!)

I can personally recommend them to any Warriors who are looking to create their ebook covers themselves. The support you get from these guys is better than most you come across too, really helped me out! Got back to me super quick.

    Good luck.

You can find freebies if you Google for them, but they are all ugly. You'll get an ecover but it will be unprofessional and won't encourage a lot of sales.

If you don't have much cash to spend, just hire someone to create the cover for you. You can have them done for anywhere between $10 - $30 and they'll look great.

If you find some good ebook templates with graphics then you can just drag them into the cover actions.

first you'll need to load the action script in ur photoshop action window, after that, u choose what u want to make (the design look like), usually it will be named step 1.

edit all the layer that step 1 created.

after finish, then press step 2.

Hi... my 1st post here. Just looking for some information on the eCover Design. I try to create a 3D Animated eCover.... and the result is quite good. The animation in GIF format, but the file is big.... W350 x H350 will take around 1.4MB. 3-4 years ago, i was told to keep the size of any images on the website as small as possible. But with more improve speed of the internet now, do you think this size is too big?

ANOTHER WAY of doing it - for free, is take a look at some tutorials for Photoshop on using the vanishng point - takes a little getting used to, but for generating software boxes, it could do the trick. Try this site - It has a specific tutorial on the vanishing point that can be adapted to creating a software box:

    http:/ / www . planet photoshop . com / vanishing - point . html

Just an idea - hope it helps! Good luck with that,

Well an ecover design is like a book cover, but only for digital products. One of the main benefits is that it cuts down printing cost of printing a book and allows you to profit more selling it online. Now myself I just do not design ecovers for minisite authors, because I don't make much money off them, now where I make the BIG BUCKS, I use the scripts for product packaging development, designing for small Software companies that sell instant download products, for schools that offer eCourses (Digital Textbooks) for individuals who writes novels and children books. For Independent artist who sells their album online. Covers actions can be used for more then your average ebook, nothings wrong thinking outside the box and creating another business that can make you more money.

After reading this thread and done some research online, I narrowed it down to the following choices.

        Software that needs Photoshop:
"eCover Black Pack" (http://ebookcoveractionscript.com). I actually purchased it (without realizing that it needs Photoshop). Because I don't have Photoshop, I requested a refund. However, after a few emails back and forth, the seller told me that the "100% Satisfaction Guarantee" on the site doesn't mean that I can get my money back, so I am out of luck. Fortunately for me, the cost was only $9.99.

Software that doesn't need Photoshop, but needs a Graphics program:
"Box Shot 3D" (Box Shot 3D: Ebook Cover and Boxshot Software For Windows and Mac Home). You can download a 30 day fully functional free trial to check it out. The free trial ads a watermark to your creations, so you can't use them until you purchase the product. It costs $67.00 so it's not too bad considering that it's easy to use and the generated graphics are of great quality.

Software that doesn't need Photoshop or any Graphics program:
"eCover 3D" (eBook Cover Design Software | eCovers | Cover Design | eBook Software) the best piece of software (in my opinion) but also the most expensive of the 3 at $97.00. It comes with a Graphics program integrated and more than 150 templates.

Of course there are also free services and products, like sites that let you create your own eCovers for free and software you can download also for free, but remember that you get what you pay for, so if quality and uniqueness are important to you, don't waste your time using them.

I hope that this will help those still looking...

      Hey Guys,

I've looked over CAP 2 on Mark's page yesterday and plan to purchase it eventually. Just two concerns/questions:

1.) Is this product a multi-license product? In other words, can I install this on all of my computers?

2.) Does anyone know of a way to obtain the bonus DVD that was initially sent out with the pre-order copies?

I believe it was some sort of template DVD. At least that's what I noticed on a video on YouTube. If you search for "Cover Action Pro 2" you will see an unboxing video. This can also be found on Mark's blog as well.

        1. CAP 2.0 is not a software its script actions so you can use them on any pc or mac that has photoshop installed (I think CS2-CS4)you can also download a free trial of photoshop for 30 days from the Adobe website.

        2. I think you can still get the bouns DVD if you buy the Extreme version.(Don't quote on that, not sure.)

          Wow...

Duh, what was I thinking? I was aware that they are scripts, but for some reason still thought to ask that. Must be more tired than expected!

However, many mention that it works for CS2-CS4. What about higher versions?

As far as the bonus DVD, it doesn't mention it on the sale page. It was noted previously that it was pretty much added as incentive for pre-orders, so I don't think it would come with the current offer. Shame.
