Why am I not getting search traffic?

This may be obvious to you but it has caught out some others recently - did you make sure that it was visible to the search engines? At some point in the settings there is a check box that you need to uncheck in order for the SEs to be able to index your site - I'm sorry I can't be more clear but I can't remember exactly where it is. I just know that there were several people who had the same issue and that is what it turned out to be.

Try searching site:yourdomain.com in Google if your site will come up.

Are the article you've created use the keywords in the title? Did you submit them to article directories? How many backlinks a day did you create? Are your comments all the same?

I did have that box checked for 2 weeks and caught it its been 3-4 weeks since then. When I search for site:spanish-learning-software.com it does come up so the site is indexed. Do I just need more backlinks? I have several hundred already. Is it just a waiting game?

You will see more traffic when you have at least 1 article a day posted in your blog. Search engine like updated blogs. Try to use plugins for SEO and ping your site when you have new content.

I wasn't planning on doing a blog just using WP to build a content site, I could do a blog but I don't want the blog to be the homepage. I have been using a blog post as the front page since I havent figured out how to set a "page" as the home page in WP.

If I set a page as the home page I could have a seperate link to the "blog" and post there regularly.

I did some keyword research, and for one spanish learning software is a bit of a competitive term....

2.7 million

with quotes about 10 000 competing pages, however average page rank is about 4, they range 3-7.

I've done some tests with wordpress and have been able to rank with no backlinks .... maybe work on keyword density, or it's possible that you have to work harder for this term.

If this is the only thing preventing you from having a 'blog' then here's the easy way to do this:

1. First decide which page you want to have as your home page, and which page you want to have as your blog page. You may have to create a page called blog (leave it empty), and maybe even a page that you will use for your home page.

2. In the wordpress dashboard, click on Settings->Reading.

3. Select the radio button next to "A static page"

4. Select the page you want as your home page in the FRONT PAGE pull-down menu

5. Select the page you want as your blog page in the POSTS PAGE pull-down menu.

Note: Depending on your target audience, you may not want to call the blog page, "BLOG", they may think it's some kind of disease. :p I often call this page, Updates, News, etc. but it's up to you.

I've just installed a BRAND-NEW website, with a BRAND-NEW domain name 10 days ago and it is picked up now by google. I've installed the 2 plugins above, made about 4 good blog entries, and used a lot of TAGS for each post. The tag pages got picked up first, then the actual blog pages.

The site IS listed (indexed) in google (search for "site:spanish-learning-software.com" - there are about 33 results as of now).

It's not enough to be listed (which you ARE), but to be highly ranked for the keywords that matter.

As a test, I took the keyword "Learn Spanish Lessons" and your site is not listed in the first 51 pages... I stopped there...

But most of your customers will stop after the 1-2 pages, and NEVER bother with the EVEN 3rd page.

Do you have an idea which keywords brought you those 6 organic visitors? If not you can go through the awstats or webalizer results for this site, and it will list the keywords that brought the customers to you.

Now this is where the marketer in you, not the technical SEO worker, needs to assert yourself!

Think as a customer and sit down at your pc and start 'looking for spanish lessons' What keywords are you using? Start focusing on getting to the 1-2 pages for these...

And another thing... I would not expect the spanish lesson market to be highly aware of the power of using "quotes" when searching, so you need to look at ranking for without quotes. Obviously every one in the unquoted results is competition but I think the theory is that those who don't show up in quotes are not trying to optimize for that keyword. If that's the case in theory I can out optimize them for that keyword, at this point they should be crushed competition not real competition.

I do know every keyword, Google analytics, some of them were even product names, which kind of surprised me. The problem is I need 600 or 6000 not 6, heck I would settle for 60 right now.

Product names are good. Usually a sign that the buyer has already done some research, and is 'warm'. Are you seeing anything like "product-name review", "product-name genuine", etc? I've gotten these visitors converting somewhat higher than anyone else. I assume they were leaning towards a purchase and needed a final nudge.

But all that is fine for later... right now we are splitting hairs over the best traffic types, and you are barely seeing any traffic at all....

So here's a few more ideas:

1. I also suggest you put up a sitemap PAGE, which will make every url on your site accessible within 2 clicks. i.e. 1 for the sitemap page, and one for the deep-linked page. Great for visitors (when they finally decide to come

), and great for search engines (which are already at your site now and looking for something to chew on.)

2. Also, I think there is some error in your permalinks or wp-config set up as the pages and posts are showing up as: domain-name/index.php/page-or-post-name. It's not 'normal' to see this index.php in the URL... ever. See how it got there, my assumption is that you DON'T want it there.

But before you remove it... perhaps you want to go to google/yahoo/bing and note down the 30-or-so URLs that are using this domain/index.php/page-name convention and note it down. Then install a 301 Redirection plugin. Once you 'fix' your config to remove this 'index.php' from the middle of the URL.... add the old & new pages to the 301 Redirection plugin.

This way any URLs visits by search engines to those 'old' domain/index.php/page-name, will still be able to enjoy whatever linkjuice they had even after they've been changed to the new URL.

3. And finally, keep consistently adding something to your site on a regular basis. 1 page every 1-2 days... I would not waste any further time setting up a blog page..

I tried to remove the index.php part once before and it crashed the whole site. I dont know how it got there or how to get rid of it. I just asumed it had to be there.

It's not that tough guys. Just start building those links. Try some blog commenting with your URL and also submit to sites like digg.com... These don't really increase your google PR, but they do count as links and they count towards your rankings.

It's really hard to build momentum in this game, I know, I've been there! Just keep at it. It is possible... I'm having trouble taking my Adsense past $10/day... seems like no matter how much work I do, it just stays there, and if only there was someone that was making $100 a day that I could have tell me what to do, I'd be set... but the thing is I felt the exact same way when I wanted to make $1 a day and then $5, $7, $10. Just be optimistic and work hard and it will come!

Then create a site map & link it with your site.

This does'nt stop with it , then you have to create backlinks to your site from other popular sites. Probably u can hire a blog posters , articles posters & they would help you out with it.

One thing about Google that I think people often forget, is that one of there primary algorithms for search results is the length of time a domain has been established on the internet.

Your site has only been established for one month. Think about how many other Spanish learning websites have been established longer than yours.

It can be argued that no-one truly understands Google's algorithms but... after talking to hundreds of marketers, reading numerous studies and personal experience, it can only be assumed that domain ownership length is very important.

I think your site looks great and you have done some great work trying to get your site ranked.

Keep it up!

The next step, though, and most difficult, is to simply wait.

This is just my 2 cents but it seems like this is the primary reason your site hasn't been ranked yet.

A pr is not a guaranteed that you will get a high rank for your keywords. Have you did a complete research about your competitor? How many backlinks that they got? Are you sure that your backlinks are dofollow?

You need to focus on backlinking for a certain anchor text, that relates to your site the most and doesn't have too much competition. Even a keyword that gets only 2,000 searches a month on Google with low competition is going to do huge wonders!

Sorry I have been absent for a few days. Had to work the "real" job among other things.

First off thanks all for all the great info and advice. Many of the things you all mentioned I have done. I have the all in one seo plugin and google xml sitemaps. I have been building links though not at the pace I know I should.

As for SEO in general I have my main keyword Spanish learning software in the title and around 1-2%+ throughout the site. I am using keyword targeted anchor text in my links as well as some with just the url so as to create a more natural linking pattern. Each keyword is high search (over 1k a month) low competition (under 10k in quotes). Some are slightly lower search but have only like 5 competitors in quotes, I figured that was a no brainier.

I am on a VERY limited budget, {I have my own offline company (construction in Shenandoah valley va if anyone needs anything and ran out of work, am now working 2 low paying jobs and still not coming close to what I need, kids have to eat so paying for stuff, link building etc is out...for now}.

Each page on the site is targeting "sub" keywords and has articles and back links to it directly. I have gotten in trouble in the past with the ol sandbox on a different site so I am leery of creating to many back links to fast but I have heard that I cant do enough manually to cause a problem.

I switched out the home page for a static page and will probably use posts at some point to give fresh content to the site.

One thing I haven't really done is social book marking. I have to admit I don't really understand it. Digg I get but delicious for instance, near as I can tell no one is going to see my bookmarks unless they are following me. That means I have to build a following which seems like just as much work as blog/forum/group commenting which I can just do and see results.

I hear and read about these people who set up sites and just get traffic. Having done it a few times it seems to me that the only way to build traffic is a lot of work and time. I don't mind this and would love to pay to have articles written, back links built, and posts made. I am just not there yet.

So all in all does it sound like I am doing the right things and I just need more and more time?

One other thought/question. Does Google look at comments/signatures/articles and the back links you get from them differently than say something that only a 3rd party could have done? Say USA Today wrote about me and put a link in the article on their website. That is something I can just do it seems like more of a hard link not a web 2.0 link. Anyone can create thousands of back links given enough time, the right software, or enough money.

What about these real hard (as I am calling them) links? Are they worth more and how can you get them? The only thing I know to do is e-mail and ask or buy or somehow generate buzz and get people doing it virally.

That just made me think of one more thing I haven't done...Video.

Cant pm until 50 posts but I would like to get it fixed especially if you think it will help seo wise. I was just working on a different site last night and had she same issue. Under settings-permalink settings I tried to set up a custom structure

/index.php/archives/%postname%

I just removed the index.php part and tried something like

/%category%/%postname%

It seemed to me that it wasn't able to distinguish what was what after that I got an error, its been a while and I cant remember exactly what happened but it didn't work and I had to change it back.

Is there somewhere else I should be changing this?

It would help us to help you if you post the error messages you are receiving.

Without knowing anything further...
1. Check the Settings tab: and the Blog URL field: any mention of 'index.php' here?
2. Check your wordpress installation directory... Is it CALLED index.php?

Also, I believe WE can PM you... so if you can tell us which of these you use: yahoo, msn, AIM, etc. ... we can send you our id.

All of the default permalink options include the index.php that's why I assumed it had to be there. I did install wordpress in the root directory. I checked a different install on a different site and the default options include index.php as well. The only way to avoid it that I saw was to not use permalinks that are text just use the default numbering scheme, which of course would be worse for SEO.

I am afraid to change it and replicate the error at this point but I think it was just a page can not be found error.

Hi Like the other guys have said here, you are in a competitive niche so as usual content is king. Do your keyword research and go for the least competitive phrases. Then start writing.....and don't stop. Make sure you ping everything you can and social book mark everything..the traiffic will then start to flow. Have a go at writing just a couple of 300-500 word articles a day one for the blog and one fro ezine articles. In less than a few weeks it will make a huge difference.

Ok, saw that you set the links back. Getting rid of the 'index.php' in the URL would help 'slightly' in terms of SEO, but not as much as other factors such as authority site backlinks, internal links, load time, etc. and the issues below.

So speaking from an SEO point of view, which was the intent of your thread... also consider some of the tweaks below.

1. Cloak the affiliate link on this page. Here's more on this.

2. Perhaps, also add a tag cloud to your site,using the widgets section of the dashboard. If your theme doesn't support tag clouds, there are plugins which will add this functionality.

3. Add a sitemap PAGE, so that every link on your site is available within 2 clicks. Here is a simple plugin that achieves this: WP Archive-Sitemap Generator – plugin | Arpit Shah's Personal Site by Arpit Shah Just read the installation instructions that come with this.

Denise, I need to do that too. I wrote 10ish articles for the site and 10is for ezine articles. I have a whole traffic funnel plan from Ryan Moran www.ryanmoran.org. It includes all that you said and more. I think I should just dedicate myself to doing that for a month. One for the site and one for directory submission every day.

i put the "tag cloud" widget in the side bar but all it does is say "tags". When creating a "page" it doesnt give you the option to add "tags". I have the all in one seo pack which I use to list keywords. So they are there in the code. Is there a way to make the tag cloud function work on pages and will it just be a visable place for keywords to be listed?

Can you give us the names of the plugins or the URLs? There are dozens of 'sitemap' and 'tag' plugins.

Also, if you check the Installation instructions for the plugins you've installed, you'll find instructions on how to add them to your wordpress pages.

I TESTED that onpage seo is not that much feasible these days compare to onsite optimization, Google keep changing its algorithms so all that is the game of seo, where many are not winners.

I installed the wp archive sitemap generator per your recommendation. Installing it wasn't a problem. I got it installed and configured just fine. I just don't know where it outputs its information.

When you say add a sitemap page I assume you mean a WP page with a link to it in the footer or sidebar. Does this plugin do that? If it creates a page I couldn't find it. If I have to create a page and place some code on it in order for the plugin to output its data there then what is that code.

Basically I got the plugin installed and configured and the only difference I noticed was that I have another plugin installed, nothing on the front end has changed.

I did not use a tag plugin I just dragged the Wordpress tag cloud widget under widgets and placed it in the sidebar. I assume that on a post it will pick up the tags and list them within that widget. Well when you create a page you don't get the option to add any tags.

I hope that clarifies my problem.

Regarding the Sitemap Generator, I assume it's the one by Arpit Shah. In this case, create a blank page and call it "Sitemap".

In the body of the 'page', just add this code in the HTML version of the editor, not the one that gives you bold/italics and all those options:

It's no secret that search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing can drive valuable traffic to your website. The main problem is it takes time to get search engine traffic if your goal is to rank for your primary keyword in the top 10 of search engines. As a result of this ranking, you'll have a flow of consistent traffic. But it would take several months to achieve a top spot and are you willing to wait that much and do nothing else? Hi, Focus on long tail keyword but you have to make a research for which long tail keyword your niche is having less number of competition and then start posting articles and blogs with related keyword and respective link.

Google analytics lists each visit and where it came from.

As for the sitemap page...That worked thanks.

I don't know what to make of the index.php issue. I may have to start a thread on it. I was able to get it working by simply restoring the original settings. Is there any possibility there is a different htaccess file that WP is trying to write to that is somewhere else?

You know... for something of average relevancy, this is one problem which has been sticking in the back of my mind since we tried working on it

Anyway, it's hard to say what the exact cause may be without looking at your site, but here are a few more links on this which sound similar to your issue and offer a solution:

From all the links, it seems that mod_rewrite is not properly installed.. by your host! Or they are using Zeus or a windows server instead of Apache. And yes, if it is a zeus server, instead of an apache server, the function of the ".htaccess"file would be served by a file called: "rewrite.script". The code is different too, and is given in the first link above.

But while you continue your own trials to resolve this, I would first send a message/launch a support ticket with your host, because I'm sure they've seen this issue before with other wordpress users on their servers.

I actually wouldn't spend more than another day on this... it may just be something you may have to live with based on your host's php/apache configuration. There are plenty more things you can do that will give you the traffic you desire.

Now if you can only just find a way to get this 'thorn' of an annoyance out of your mind.... :p

I'll keep looking into it but I am not going to move it to the top of my priority list. I need traffic more.

On that note I am starting to see an organic visit every day or 3 for some long tail and obscure keywords. Who knows, I'll keep building backlinks and adding content. It would just be more encouraging to see some results.
