What's the easiest way to create a sales letter based website with or without wordpress?

That's a broad question. If by "sales letter" you mean a "landing page" or "squeeze page", there are many samples and ebooks on how to do that.

From a code standpoint, it's just another page. Basic website or Wordpress, doesn't matter. Find a design tool you feel comfortable with, find examples online, and go from there.

You need to do some reading up, if you base all your efforts on what someone tells you in this thread, you may find later on down the line that its not right for you. See what people think, but ultimately there are to many answers when it comes to building a website. Sam's right, find a design tool and go from there. I'd personally go with Dreamweaver and get a few html tutorials to start with.

Wordpress is not commonly used if you are talking about sales page, so you will have to create a website instead.

Google is your friend. Just Google up "wordpress sale page theme" and you'll find so many Wordpress sales page theme around.

If you prefer HTML, Google up "sales page template".

You can use Artisteer to easily create static (HTML) pages or WordPress themes. There are tutorials on our blog.

Thesis theme does that too, you need to customize the css though. Oh yes, the creator of SqueezeTheme has another theme called SalesPageTheme, you don't need css customization, so it's easier. Just my 2 cents.

I make all my squeeze pages and sales pages with Wordpress. The best way is to use a customisable template and build your pages around that :-)
