What design elements should I implement?
I own a pligg site (link in my subscription). While I have had a lot of different design elements on my bookmarking site, I decided that they are overused by so many other sites that I am not going to use them anymore. I took a template which looked really "nice," and made it barebones. My site is now lite, efficient, and can have custom elements added. I want to stand out from the million other pligg based sites.
So...
When looking at other bookmarking sites, what are some of your favorite design features? Obviously, some sites like Reddit and Delicious are very plain and poorly laid out, while other sites, such as Evri, have fantastic design elements I only wish I could implement.
Do you really care about all the bells and whistles on bookmarking sites, or are you only interested in the overall process of getting a backlink?
What do you think? Should I ditch the navigation bar in favor of something a little more contemporary? (see hootsuite for example). Should I implement thickbox or lightbox elements for featured content at the top of the site? Maybe a twitter or facebook module right on the front page?
