Anyone ever use "Badges" as a link building method?

I have an opportunity to use "badges" as a viable link building option. Question though...Can I use "anchor text" within the embed code of a website badge? I'm going to create "member loyalty" badges that have actually been requested by members who want to place them on their own blogs/sites. I have a developer to create the badges, but can we also associate relevant anchor text with them. I guess like you do with images using Alt text, is that possible with a website badge?

Sorry if my question is really amateur from a developer's standpoint. I just don't know. Thanks.

badges...like membership badges, etc. SEOmoz.org offers badges showing what grade your site had from their trifecta report, etc. Other badges I can think of are Better Business Bureau, etc. It's basically an image with a link to your site embedded in it.

probably, it would be slow going though unless you owned the sites. What would your badge mean?

ok, I guess I have a few badges on my ecommerce site, then. but they are all inserted with javascript and googlebot doesn't read javascript so you would not be able to use them for backlinks in this manner. but if you are creating your own badges then they could be added with html instead of javascript.

I'm not sure if this answers your question... I mean, the answer seems too easy so i'm guessing I'm wrong, but I don't fully understand how you expect to use badges to build backlinks because they aren't something you can create. Other people must voluntarily add the code to the html of their own websites. Do you have a large following of people with the ability to do this? but they want a "badge" instead of a text link or banner ad?

Thats not a bad idea. You can place your website link by mentioned powered by your company website. Its a nice idea. Yes, it can be done on the images of those badges easily.
