When using WordPress I generate one sitemap for human visitors with the Dragon Design plugin.

Then I combine that with a sitemap for crawlers using Google XML Sitemap plugin.

Here's an example from my blog:

    Sitemap

      Hey jamhelmcor,

.xml is what Google's search engine bot prefers and you can submit it to Google Webmaster Tools.

Use the Google XML Sitemaps plugin if you use WordPress as it will keep your sitemap updated.
      Just upload and activate it.

As well as a sitemap for the bots you also want one for people and the Sitemap Generator Plugin for Wordpress · Dagon Design that Norma recommended is what I use also. Just upload and activate it then create a WordPress page called Sitemap and put this code in the html:
      <!-- ddsitemapgen -->

That's all you have to do but I would also suggest putting a link to your .xml sitemap in your DD sitemap page.
Go to Settings > DDSitemapGen and put your .xml sitemap url(http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml) in
Full path to XML sitemap: and click Update Options.

      Hope that answers your question.

For websites of less than 500 pages I have used xml-sitemaps dot com (with the extra advantage it works for static websites also, works like a charm if you have your permalinks in place)

    Has the following features:
XML, ROR, HTML and TEXT maps download.

    Hope it serves you!

When you add a new page into your site, (I am not talking about a site in wordpress as it has a tool which automatically generate a sitemap when a new page will be added to a site) then every time you have to generate a sitemap.xml file and upload it into your site's root directory.

free wordpress plugin -- think its called archive sitemap generator. Just paste the shortcode on a page and done. I never liked the one from dagon designs because you can't get rid of his link -- at least I never figured out how.

If you are using WordPress you can easily install and activate the XML sitemap Plugin along with All in One Webmaster and your site will automatically update your sitemap every time you add new content or make changes to existing content.
The sitemap will also be automatically submitted to Google, Bing and Yahoo (WHO!)
If you submit your RSS feed as well to these 3 search engines then your new posts will be included.

I wouldn't use "archive sitemap generator" I found out once I activated the plugin it has the author's adsense pub ID on it. It is ok to ask for donation but I don't think the developer should be stealing adsense income from people without letting them know. I deleted that plugin immediately after finding out.

I would recommend you go one step further and install an all in one seo solution . WordPress Seo plugin is made by the original creator of all in one seo which has been downloaded over 7.6 million times

The greatest thing about this plugin is it gives you a snippet of what you meta description looks like in Google SERPS. Its exactly what it will look like and it includes XML site map and covers all seo bases
