Wordpress Frustrations!

I have to vent somehow...

I dont know if anyone else has experienced this with wordpress. I have written several articles for my site in wordpad a week ago and decided to past them onto my pages.

When I do so stuff randomly starts changing in my article. A certain paragraph may randomly go bold. The paragraphs may get re-arranged, font size may or may not increase or decrease etc etc. After I spend time fixing it getting it looking right and hit UPDATE, it just screws up randomly again. There is no pattern as to what changes each time I hit update or paste my article onto my page...it happens every time and has happened on multiple sites.

I cant believe a platform as popular as wordpress has such fundemental flaws as this? I literally have spent an hour trying to PASTE just ONE article onto a page and correcting all the crap that keeps getting changed. I dare not hit update once I get it right.

When you copy and paste into Wordpress; it's not only the text that gets copied. Formatting and other stuff can come over via your clipboard and the weird stuff is probably wordpress trying to render it.

I usually copy'n'paste into a (proper) text program (Notepad++) then copy and paste THAT into WP...removes the formatting and gives me 'clean' text.

Of course, sometimes you can copy'n'paste straight from Word (or whatever) and the formatting gives you exactly the look you were after. Problem is; there can be some formatty bits floating about that may cause you some problems later.

Well it does have a crappy editor, among other things.

What I do is get my post 'close' in visual mode. At some point I switch to HTML mode. After I switch modes I do not ever edit in visual mode again. It's visual mode editor that re-writes things to it's own liking.

    Try it out.

I use notepad or notepad++ so no rtf (rich text formatting) gets copied over. WordPress 3.1 has a few little bugs (it's been updated today) but install the hotfix wordpress plugin and keep it updated to fix any little glitches before WP itself updates.

It's not WP. It's the user...

Don't copy ever from Wordpad or MS Word or any other word processor! It's that simple.

      Yes, Istvan is correct.

Copy from the word processing software to Notepad first. Then copy from Notepad to the WordPress editor.

Microsoft uses non-standard characters in their word processors, creating worlds of problems for users who do not know how to transfer that content out of the Windows environment.

Like Istvan I write straight into WP. I usually used the visual editor and only switch to html when adding scripts and such. Once I've done that I try not to use the visual editor again as it can play around with the way things look.

I've been using WP for years and I love it.

You can copy directly from MS Word (or other word formatting processors), however, in order to avoid strange formatting you should paste your text into "HTML" and not "Visual" editor inside Wordpress.

As usual, people complaint about the car, not the way they drive. As stated you need to post in WP without text formatting, otherwise you'll copy all the things you don't want to.

In a couple days/weeks you'll laugh about this and enjoy more of your WP experience, trust me.

    Hi Carp,

Boy, I've been through the same challenges, too. It is so frustrating attempting to get WP editor to do things simply and cleanly . . . and even worse if you want to copy from another wordprocessor or editor.

If you are uploading MULTIPLE blogs posts at one time, I've found a great FREE time saver (I love free!). I save my files into a TXT file, bundle them into a ZIP file and use an awesome plugin called WP Import to import ALL the posts at once into my blog.

I really hated uploading or typing one blog at a time. I do it for my clients, too. They send me a bunch of blog posts at one time and zip .. they're scheduled into their blogs. My clients love it!! (and I love the time it saves me).

I'm getting ready to do a Ver. 2.0 on a recent WSO and I'm adding some training on this cool free plugin. Get the plugin now and play with it . . . or you can take up the WSO now and get in on the free upgrade to 2.0 in the next few days . . . (Link to WSO)

Let me know how it works for you!!

You are posting in the wrong place.

There are no WP devs in this forum.

If you want to contribute/improve WP - go to their site, sign up to their development/hacker and/or tester list and tell them what you have to say:

As some of you suggested, I tried notepad. Im not having as many issues however the only issue I am having I can't seem to get rid of. When pasting from notepad into wordpress the sentences seem to break onto the next line at random places. One line may have 3 words, the next may have 10, etc...I just don't understand this.

Due to my circumstances I cannot write directly into wordpress most of the time so to save time I write into other text programs and paste it in when I have time.

It sounds like you have hard returns in your text - be sure that when you are writing in notepad to only use the Enter key between paragraphs. If your lines aren't wrapping automatically, go under the Format menu and check that Word Wrap is selected.

There is a free program called NoteTab Lite that has an option to join lines. It gets rid of extra line breaks. I could never rid myself of them just using notepad.

try using just the html editor full time, its not difficult to read the code once you get used to it, plus it allows you to have much better control over the end result.

I thought I was the only one going bonkers over the changing fonts. What I did to fix it was just copy into the html editor. All fonts look the same now. I edit the font style in the style.css file

I personally think the easiest method to use is to click on the "Paste as Plain Text" button (open the kitchen sink if you don't see it).

Then there is no need to use an intermediate editor like notepad or similar.
