Nobody in this world can confirm page ranking. Everybody assumes and tries. And it might take time to get higher ranking. But web design is in your hand. And it's directly related to monetization. Your web design can help you start and boost your income even without SEO.

Seo is far more important especially if you want to fund your artistic side of webdesign. In my case - mobile web design. Hours put into seo can make or break you...

you can have a great looking site but if no one can find you....

that said you can be at the top of google but wont matter if your site cant convert visitors...

in my opionion you need a good balance of both possibly slightly more favored towards seo...

Both are "working" hand in hand.

If your site is coded bad you may get less visitors...

Both Web cannot go on without promote and

and even huge promote don't work on bad website design.

Nice web without visitor will be dead by owner lack of will to continue
Bad Looking web with load of visitor will be dead by no one dare to buy coz lack of Reliability.

I concur, you need both. And it's very realistic to have gorgeous websites that are seo optimized. But I'm a firm believer also that the two go together and you want to shoot for both.

All the sites I did for our company are coded well and the SEO (onpage and offpage) are done well...

Our company does very good, we are planning to hire more programmers.

We are working together with a SEO agency and I think they know what to do... Google stats showing us we did it right.

It really depends on the type of site you are building. Even though I am an SEO guy, and it breaks my heart to tell you that SEO is not the only thing to focus on, the fact of the matter is you can get traffic in many other ways.

If you are building a site that, for example, is more of an attempt to get high authority instead of making money right away, then you should go with a web design focus because the look and flow of your web pages will greatly effect the reader.

But if you are like most people who are just looking to make some money as fast as possible, then I say just focus on generating traffic. A fancy web page can be distracting to your visitors when you want them to follow a funnel or click ads.

Ultimately, fancy headers and cool graphics don't really help your site become a money maker without search engine optimization so, in my opinion, you should focus on the bottom line unless you have the resources to get paid traffic. Even still, you should always do some sort of SEO (SEO guy, remember:-)).

I would have to say that both are very important. SEO- If nobody can find you, a really nicely designed website is useless. WEB DESIGN- If you get the traffic to your site and your site or design is bad, you will not get repeat visitors.

Can ignore either of them. Good web designing will also take care of a lot of SEO issues for on-page optimization. Remember, search engines read your code.

You can spend tons of dollars on SEO and still remain almost invisible for Google - that is actually a prize in the SEO races ( I mean those 1-10 search positions but not just having been indexed).

An attractive design will help you convert those visitors who come to you from other sources. This is very important if you are using some paid ad like PPC or providing an affiliate program.

Correct... Google Bot has about 200 algos implemented and there are lots of chances that you do not rank well when your domain is "young"...

for me seo starts at the core of all my designs....

from a key word rich domain name, to an optimized site structure with optimized file names content

at a minimum basic onsite seo should be part and parcel of a good web design approach and build and certainly not an after thought....

we know if we want to get target traffic from major search engines, we have to do a lot of seo work to rank higher.In a word,seo is a very important way to bring us visitors. But if when a visitor arrive your site to have a look with the bad design.I think she/he will be not happy with the annoying browsing- like bad web theme,format and mistaken characters etc. so I am sure the visitor would leave the site definitely.

But if the site is well-designed with full user friendly elements but lack of seo works to bring targeted traffic, I think the result is terrible.Zero sales or revenue.Unless you use the other ways to bring you traffic without seo.like TW,FB etc.

so If you are asking which is more important to the final sales,I think seo is more important.Coz it is the key to bring you the final revenues.even though the web design is weak but still seems okay.I think it would be no problem. You should know not all of th people are professional on web design sometimes.

i have seen lot of website with very poor design view but most of them are inside list top 5000 websites worldwide. it seams SEO is important.

according to me SEO with Quality content is necessary. domain age is also very important factor for consideration.

As it is true that you can optimize your website for search engines it will ultimately provide you with no benefit if your site is not appealing to human traffic.

This will only increase your bounce rate and lower your ranking thus negate all your hard work on SEO.

Site design should be simple and clean. Also on page SEO is something that is incredibly easy if you just follow the basic rules. I say easy because I rank on the first & second page of Google for several of my keywords without even trying (these keywords have broad search of 2 million - 98 million search results - this is also not a micro-niche and the competition is high) I get this kind of ranking without any back linking. I have only had the site up since last August.

If I were in your shoes I would just get the design finished and out of the way (when designed properly it will enhance the on page SEO naturally)

Then focus on your SEO rich content and back linking.

Google's most recent Panda update puts a lot of pressure on you to bring SEO and Design into focus hand in hand.

To put it simply, Googlebot is starting to view websites more and more like humans. Thus the design of a site is going to start playing a much larger role in how it’s ranked more than ever before.

Requirements like:

Amount of time spent on the website
Bounce rate
Number of web pages per visit
Page response times
Conversion rates

Usability goes a long way. Great content on a non-functional website that sucks is probably missing it's full potential. Likewise a great design, with no seo or lousy content won't fair well either.

Debbie, more than likely that is what he is discussing. Good code is important for a number of reasons. Like insuring your site looks the same on multiple platforms and browsers. And doesn't break or fail to load because some user has windows xp with IE 7 for example.

Also, lets not forget good code can be simple things, like "ALT" and "TITLE" tags on images. And using "no_follow" on proper links.

I would say SEO is a work of patience.

To be included in the first page of Google, you must have a good user & design interface and a great seo techniques to be used. You have to optimize both to have a better result. This is what Google Panda update love the most.
