Without doubt that mobile design is going to be one of the important trend in 2012. Also web design trend is going to change a lot. Flash has already started to loose its popularity because of its inability to work properly with mobile devices. Besides, CSS3 and HTML5 offer many benefits - interactivity, the ability of a faster loading and etc, being able to prove that they are the technologies of future, but not just a Flash replacement.

I agree that designing sites for mobile devices is going to be the main trend. My guess is that nothing else will come close. Navigation will need to be worked on so that smartphone users won't need to scroll so much. I also think we'll see a return to web-safe colors. It's my understanding that smartphones will only reliably display from the smallest palette.

I beg to differ about web safe pallets being used again. That would be going backwards by years. I can't see such a progressive technology going backwards. When the new iPad 3 come out in a few days time (I'm told) Apple's whole mobile range will be displaying 300dpi - that's print resolution. When web safe pallets were used it was 72-96 dpi.

Yeah i totally agree with black that now the web design for mobile devices is the most important trend in this year. Sites with flash and java scripts are not working properly so better is to avoid these two. For mobile sites there is a need to improve the navigation and scrolling for the convince of end user. And the most popular is android application.

Responsive Web Design. Go look it up.

HTML5, CSS, Javascript etc are not trends. They are languages used for structuring and presenting web content.

I think the whole idea of a separate 'mobile site' is going the way of flash. ie: people are realizing its stupid.

I think the trend for 2012 and into the future will be responsive design using media queries to change the css based on browser size. ie: Same site, same content, different css. My clients have been amazed with responsive design and it is clearly the way of the future.
