WEB DESIGN

Heya all,

I was wondering if you guys could comment on the design of my website. It obviously needs upgrading and I guess I'll need to purchase a template. If so, can anyone recommend a template for the educational purpose of this website. [By the way, I know nothing about computers/design etc. I just deal with the informational content]

I don't personally do this design, I get a complete beginner I know of to do it. But I appreciate any advice and criticism! Really need to improve this site, just made it a few weeks ago but it needs some serious upgrade.

  Well, like the person above said... It's really hard to give an honest opinion without sounding harsh. So here goes (If you are really looking for the improvement suggestions)
  
  1. Color scheme - I mean it's OK, but kind of ugly at the same time, especially that baby blue.
  2. Left hand nav bar - does not look good centered, at least to me.
  3. Displaying javascript clocks and the date - this is like so 1993. Honestly.
  4. Top nav buttons that disappear on hover, really, that's an outdated technique as well.
  
  I would suggest to at least go to the themeforest.com and take a look at the designs people have there. Try to analyze why and how they do that.
  
  But the main thing is - what is the point of this website? To drive traffic and hit them with AdSense? You will need a lot of great quality articles.
  Oh, and the last thing, when I clicked on one of the links, it tried to download a .ppt file. You know, people are uncomfortable downloading stealth files like that.
  
  On the positive note - at least you are trying to do something. 80% of population (acording to Pareto) are just idling. So, cudos for that.

I suggest getting an experienced web designer/developer who'll give your website a good appeal.

If you can't afford such, you can get free/paid wordpress themes out there on google.

Out of date is the first thing that pops into my mind - you should buy yourself a good WP theme and redesign your site

Healthsphere, I like your site the most among Sitepointers and now you're skin-idea is coooooooL too. As I said, I had idea of Website Themes, but it was for colors ONLY.

My advice would be..... REDESIGN
It's not an easy job, you have a whoooole lot of information on you website, but try something with dropping menus, categories. Someone said it already, it's just too confusing, and honestly I would close it right away :/ No offense of course.
Also, plain white background, that's OK, but no header, no footer.. website just looks like he put everything there is on home page, it looks like a teenage boys bedroom
Make some form, navigation bars left, header, footer. But probably best thing is to look for a suitable Wordpress theme, you don't need to be any designer/programmer to see if you like it or not. So just go over to google, type "Wordpress themes" and find the right one for you

  I haven't read all the posts yet, so if someone else has already mentioned these things, I apologize.
  
  1) Lose the clip art. For example, the surgeon. Replace all of it with photos. You can get photos relatively inexpensively at Big Stock Photo dot com. (Sorry, this is a new account and I can't post links yet.)
  
  2) When you're searching for a WordPress theme, look for a RESPONSIVE theme. Responsive means that it's viewable on various mobile devices like iPhones, iPads, etc. VERY important these days!
  
  3) Use better color contrast. Light blue and green text on a white background is eye straining.
  
  4) Watch out for stuff overlapping. Half of your slider images are cut-off.
  
  5) "This Site is Best Viewed in Mozilla Firefox & Google Chrome" This type of disclaimer hasn't been used since the 1990s. I'm not being rude, just honest. A good WordPress theme will be cross-browser compatible.
  
  There are other things, but I think everyone else hit on most of them. Good luck with your redesign.

Looking good but I'm not telling it best. Here's nothing to say it professional.
I think you should contact with someone expert in designing.
your site hasn't anything attractive and nothing to engaged people .
but the site content is awesome, go on with your hard work.

To tell the truth, there are a lot of options and tabs in your site. Try to keep it fresh. The lime color of the tabs are OK but the blue transaction is not going well for me. Its only my thoughts. Over all good job.

Okey dokey, I should have responded sooner to these comments (!It's been 3 weeks and I've revamped the website!), totally forgot about this thread after it looked like all comments were done after a few days.

Well, thanks for all the comments. Since you guys last commented, I've wholly transformed the website and taken as much advice as possible. I've installed a Wordpress theme as suggested and think the colour scheme suits the whole 'pharmacology/medicine' area more. I've since added more content as well but a lot more needs to be added.

I set up the site in late-May and had negligible visitors, only a few here and there. Now, I'm getting quite a lot of visitors at least compared to what it was. I'd be slightly concerned that I haven't filled every area yet and this might turn off visitors but the numbers are increasing daily so I must be doing something right.

Either way, from a design perspective, I hope the guys here who have commented remember what it looked like before and let me know what difference it makes now? Of course, I'm sure there are more design problems and feel free to comment on those as well.

It's a pity that some posters here have spammed (Post #15).

I think the website contains lost of information. I would make it tighter to target a particular group, maybe chemotheraphy treatments ,treatments for diabetics etc.

It is an very informative website and I think you can find most of the latest health research and information online, though the search box would be used pretty frequently.

Likewise, the Medicines section focus on Pharmacokinetics which is integral to the understanding of Pharmacology. Thus, Pharmacology is the main subject of the site but it looks non-specific because each field is spread as a different section but they are all related and overlap significantly. :-)

I would say its mainly a problem with the template. I am sure if you could get a better template then i am sure you get it looking better than it does currently.

Hi, i've read the thread and basing the previous comments, I know you have done a great job in redesigning it. It does look good, I. Just hope that there was a better categorization of the articles, they are just lining up on your home page. A better header is also recommended... The logo of your site looks much like a clip art if you know I mean.... Well just my two cents...

Well, I'm unsure whether you can line articles any other way? The way it is at the moment is that the most recently uploaded are at the top...
I'll definitely look into the logo...it wasn't professionally done and I'm no expert in making logo's to be honest - can you recommend any software or something not too expensive in how I can improve it?
