You can use a website builder like Wix or Exai.com
It's a fast and easy way for a beginner such as yourself to create custom websites.
This could be a great alternative to learning web design, which is more difficult and time-consuming. However, you can also make some nice sites by learning basic HTML and how to work with a text editor.

I think its better to learn web design. The first poster who replied gave a good suggestion. W3schools is a good resource. Another thing you can do to help you is to use the "Inspect Element" available in Google Chrome or firebug for firefox. These tools help you to see the code responsible for displaying the webpage. You can play around with the css code to see how the code changes affect the page, and you can learn coding structure and what specific codes are responsible for.

If you're quite new to it then as dsimie suggested, check w3schools. But if you already know some basic HTML then have a look for 'Twitter Bootstrap' it's a HTML/CSS/Javascript user interface that is really easy to use. I've built a few websites using it and I found it really easy to use, read the guides on the Bootstrap website and you'll get an idea of what to do.

Best way to learn Web Design is to search Google for good tutorials (there are thousands), visit w3schools.com/web/web_design.asp or do a course. There are many good distance learning courses available in web design where you can pick up a good qualification and learn HTML and CSS the proper way.

Also, have a look on Google for HTML5 (may as well learn the latest standards) website templates and study the code. Theme Forest allow you to download a monthly free web template where you can study the HTML, CSS and jQuery and really find out some good stuff!

I really strongly agree with this although at some point you need to actually start typing code and that's when you may need it in written form i.e. sample code that you're going to type /copy. but never the less videos are much easier to learn from.

I agree about having to actually start typing code for sure. Video courses that teach a complete line by line start to finish project are the easiest to learn from providing the guy/gal takes the time to clearly explain what is going on.

I believe the best way is to jump in and do it yourself. Buy a domain and hosting service and get to work! Think of a topic you are passionate about and build your website around the topic.

This is the approach I took. I used bluehost, and started with an easy to use CMS (Concrete 5... free with service), then moved to Modx (which is a really good CMS to learn more indepth coding stuff), then removed CMS completely and run all sites "off the grid" with PHP... You can google just about anything and find the answer you are looking for when it comes to coding.

It will take desire and persistence, but if you find that you really enjoy it you will keep learning and develop your skills... if you don't enjoy it, you saved yourself tons of money on college classes.

Web designing is a huge concept.you should first have clarity of why you want create a website ?
If you are a newbie you can learn HTML and CSS but if you want to create some website without any knowledge you can try blogspot or wordpress which are free and you can find many tutorials in youtube.
If you want advanced coding than use HTML5 and .NET for Advanced learners

This will help you learn a lot about website development. You should also learn how to use content management systems in developing and designing websites. These tips are all basic, easy to do tips that can have your personal or small business site look like you have been doing site design forever.
1. When designing business sites- use a white or subtle bordered background - It looks more professional.
2. Do keep a theme throughout the site - a logo and navigation on each page - This way the vistor knows he is still at the same site.
3. Do use the same font throughout the site - don't use verdana on one page and arial on another.
4. Keep animation to a minimum - Use it to draw attention to special offers or information.
5. Do use browser safe colors whenever possible.
6. Do make your site browser compatible - do not use scripts, applets, DHTML, etc. that are only compatible with one browser.
7. If you use cutting edge technology, design a second site for those vistors who still have a an older browser.
8. Do keep your vistors in mind - Design the site for the people who are going to visit, not for yourself You might like bold, bright colors, but a funeral directors site should use subtle colors and hues.
9. Do use height and width tags for your images - this loads the page faster and also is useful to search engine spiders.
10. Do add proper navigation on each page - At the very least you should have a home button on each page.
11. The ideal is both text and graphic "toolbars" on each page so that a vistor can get to any page on your site.
12. Do design for the "three click" theory - this means that any section of your site should only be 3 clicks away.
13. Do use a site map for complex sites - this way if your vistor gets lost, they can always go back home or to the site map.

when I started learning some one advised me to learn web design tips from w3school but I do not think its a webdesign learning site. we can learn basic coding from there but will not be able to design and develop a professional web site.
So I suggest you to join any professional institute where you will practically learn what you want.

for begginers choose keywrods from adword with high global ranking and low competition..
also do take to chose only 3-4 keywords..
use these keywrds in the title..
submit ur website url to top directory with pr above 5...and do blog commenting on sites similar to ur site niche..
do forum posting as much as u can..
make your content fresh and unique...above all a blooger need patience and consistence in his work..

If you're a beginner in web design and you're about to get your website made, there's a lot you have to keep in mind.
- Do not use multi-colored backgrounds with text that clashes with it- If you are using a dark colored background, use light colored text and visa versa.
- Do not use dark backgrounds and light text if you have alot of information to convey - Reading light text on a black background strains the eye.
- Do not use "rainbow text" (this would be having each letter a different color) - Another tough thing to read.
- Do not use allot of animation - Not only does this create a slower loading site, but if the visitor is going to be staying awhile, it gets annoying.
- Do not add several pop up ads for each page. They are irritating and will most likely drive the visitor away from your site.
- Do not put music on your site unless the vistor can turn it off - another annoying feature - I have been known to leave sites that have midis on them - after hearing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" for the 100th time, I can't take it anymore.
- Do not put huge photos on your page - create thumbnails for those who would like to view a larger version
- Do not use a million frames to cut up your page.
- Do not use obscure fonts - unless the visitor has the bubblegum font installed on his/her computer/ they will only see their default font
- If you need to use a unique font, create is as a graphic.
- Do not center align EVERYTHING on the site.

There`s a lot of tutorials in Youtube, and try these things;

These are the things that a web designer should always consider in choosing or doing a great website design.
1. First page takes it all - most of the bounce rate are caused by chaotic Home page or the first page of your website. I, as a regular visitor, I dont want to spend my time understanding what your design is all about. As long as I can understand it. We`re on the same side.
2. Left to right, Top to bottom policy - You should always keep in mind that we are taught by our teachers to read from left to right and top to bottom. Same as reading or following a website flow. It should be from left to right and top to bottom.
3. Keep it short but not to short - Everyone is looking for informative content but make it look interesting and not boring.
4.Use appropriate colors- I once visit a site. and darn! it gives me a headache looking at its color combination and I promise to myself I will never visit that site again. Every web designer should create a site that is attractive but not too colorful and not too pale.
5.Keep updated and Check your grammar - It is self-explanatory so no need for further explanations

First decide what type of site you want to make or create eg. blog, portfolio or e-commerce or business website

Secondly you must ensure how you going to develop the website weather you will use CMS or codes..Cms like WordPress and Joomla have plenty of plugins and extensions and they can be installed easily without any coding knowledge.

Choose your target audience.

As content plays a main part in engaging the audience and vistors of your website you must take precautions while forming content and one must jot down points to create a map of your website.

to become a web designer u have to know atleast intermediate levels of following tools.

Photo shop any version
coreldraw any version or x3
flash for animation (basically)

Dream weaver, html kit (to convert your design into html code)

Make yourself master of html, javascript, dhtml, xhtml and css also for style

And yes, do concentrate on web programming languages.

I think that any beginner, who wishes to make it large in the world of web designing, should first of all go through an online tutorial to catch the small tricks of such a job. Without the basic knowledge, it may prove to be difficult to come up with the perfect website for your client.

I personally started making web pages with Dreamweaver. But I see that most people on this thread recommend other training classes. I do know that setting up a Template Page on Dreamweaver makes it super-easy to change all the pages at once. I am working on that now.

I will go to those sites you all recommended and see what they are all about.

I have a book I like, it is HTML Goodies by Joe Burns, Ph.D. (the website used to match this, but no longer...) and a website, The Site Wizard: thesitewizard.com: Website design, promotion, CGI, PHP, JavaScript scripting, and revenue earning..

I am re-designing my websites right now, starting with my Nontrad site.

I can't wait to explore all the great resources I found out about today, here on this thread. I think they will be a great help. Thanks, fellow Warriors!

lots of "how" advise.. I know you did not ask this but have you considered the "why" as in, why do you want to learn to design websites when you can simply outsource this for next to nothing. I went through the learning curve, took me 4 years since I could not focus on it full time, had to make a living along the way. During that time HTML5, CSS3 and responsive design came on the scene and my skills seemed to become obsolete almost as soon as I was learning. I am glad I know what I know, now I can pick up a $50 theme or template at themeforest or templatemonster and really turn it into something awesome. However, unless you go through the whole process of becoming extraordinary as a web developer (by the way, do you want to code or design, two vastly different things), you probably won't make much money as a mediocre developer. I can post a web design project on any one of 10 different outsourcing sites and get a site done for less than $200 for a decent design. Depending on what part of the world you are in, that may make sense for you. Your profile has no info on where you are from.

If you are in America, UK, Australia.. you are probably not going to be making a lot of money as a coder.. that skill does not pay much.

Hence the question that I would invite you to examine.. why do you want to learn design?

BTW, most recommendations to go to W3schools are for coding, not design. Your original post says "design tips".. W3schools is not for design.
