Is Thesis Necessary When Getting A Custom WordPress Design?

Hi Warriors,

My situation is basically this:

I am about to invest in a custom WordPress site design to upgrade the look of my site. I am prepared to invest around $500.

I'm currently building my site on Thesis but want my site to look quite dramatically different from what the default theme looks like.

What I'm wondering is - when hiring a designer to create the new design should I have them build it on WordPress standalone or on WordPress with the Thesis Framework.

What are your thoughts?

Are there any advantages or disadvantages to taking one route or the other?

    I think with a $500 budget you are probably going to get something that works better if you continue to use Wordpress + Thesis. While I'm sure there are good designers that can create a solid, fast, custom site for that price, I think you have a better shot of getting a functional, snappy site if you stick to Thesis designers. Plus, if you move away from that designer and want to make changes in the future, it will be a lot simpler to find a new Thesis-skilled designer to make those changes.

    Besides, have you checked out the Thesis gallery to see what people can do with Thesis? If you can give your designer a good idea of what you are looking for, I am sure you will be able to get a result that works well, looks good, and doesn't bare a striking resemblance to the default Thesis.

      This is good advice. Particularly if you are already familiar with Thesis.

    I like genesis instead of thesis. According to my developer view I like standalone custom themes as it gives more flexibility to develop a site and it really takes time. On the other hand when a developer use a framework that means he is saving his time to get some $$$. I think stand alone themes are more customizable and can be more feature riced and much more fast loading.

    I agree with the 'stay with Thesis' views.

    For a start, with Thesis you know you have good, clean underlying code. Then you have the SEO features that enable you to avoid (or at least reduce) the number of SEO plugins you're using.

    The downside is that you'll need to find a designer who knows Thesis because, to get the best out of it, they will need to understand how to use the custom functions file's filters and hooks.
