CMS for wildcard domains...

Ok. I have asked this question on other forums... but I never got a good answer. What I want to do:

1. set up a basic site on domain1.com with wordpress or a similar CMS system (b2 evolution springs to mind)

2. set up the hosting account with a wild card domain enabled.

3. Then set up a number of blogs running of the base install, but redirected to the appropriate site.

I know that b2 evolution CAN do this, I think that WPMu should be able to do this... It seems obvious that we do this: cut the hassle of updating every blog's plugins....

BUT WPMu didn't work well with many WP plugins... esp. those that used some webspace for files... it was a difficult system to work with... But B2 doesn't have that many great plugins...

So what are other warrriors using? Also which hosting company can do this. Dreamhost told me they couldn't do wild card domains but they could do wildcard subdomains. Would that be okay for Google?
