Need help converting to new Wordpress Theme/Design

Hi,

I am going to revamp our wordpress site: The Betty Rocker

As you can see, it is pretty outdated. Anyways, we bought a new theme and I plan on customizing the homepage and theme before we put it up. What is the best way to design the site and then make the switch when it is ready?

Should I download the site to my local server and make the changes that way? Or create a subdirectory for the development site and then make the switch?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Both ways could work perfectly. I always use XAMPP on my machine... but I also know other people who do it in a subdir or subdomain - just make sure the search engines don't find it!

As always Istvan is spot on.

If you do it in a subdomain, the easy way to keep the search engines out is with your .htaccess file. Determine the external IP of your connection ( What's My IP Address? Networking Tools & More is one way to do that )
and add the following to your htaccess file in the subdir or subdomain you are using for development
      Code:
      order deny,allow
      deny from all
      #substitute your IP for nnn.nn.nn.nn
      allow from nnn.nn.nn.nn

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

Ok Sounds great. If I do a subdomain, do I have to worry about changing url links?

And would I use the Wordpress importer/exporter to get all the content on my dev site?

    1. I don't know what URL links are.

    2. You could use the exporter/importer or a simple database export (done from MySQL via phpMyadmin).

Both the methods work well. I prefer to do the customization in local and then migrate it to the live site. As simple as that!

You should download to local to make changes for your websites. I recommend this.
