The important question is:
I know about the HTML5 and CSS3 and HTML4 and CSS2 as I think .in frankly speak i know the names only.I have no more info about them.
So please what is the best eBook that I should start with it??.Should I start with the old versions of HTML and CSS or HTML5 and CSS3??

I think W3C Tutorial is good for beginners. After you have knowledge about Html and Css, you can join forums relate to web design & development to ask experts on.

I think you're talking more about wanting to learn web development.

Design starts with the aesthetic, artistic and human interaction, UIX - space, elements, colour, psychology etc.... These types of books:

The Principles of Beautiful Web Design, Second Edition by Jason Beaird
Sexy Web Design - SitePoint Books
Home ? The Secrets, Tips, Insights &amp, Techniques of Web Designers who get the Job Done - The Web Designer’s Roadmap

If on the other hand you simply want to take a design (graphic/ sketch or PSD) then you want to search on converting PSD to HTML/CSS tutorials. This will lead you into the areas you mentioned in your post:

43 PSD to XHTML, CSS Tutorials Creating Web Layouts And Navigation

How to Convert a PSD Web Design to HTML and CSS | Nettuts+

You can learn HTML, CSS, PHP, etc. anywhere on the web for free. A good structured and well-reviewed book (many to choose from) will help if you have a hard time putting all the pieces together.

As a web developer that has taught for years at a large University, the primary problem people seem to have is the user interface design aspect of it. I think this is primarily because it is a bit more abstract, unlike coding that either works or it doesn't.

Human/computer interface design permeates all of our interactions today whether on a desktop, laptop, iPad, smartphone, kiosk, etc. If you are interested in web design, this human/computer interface design should rise to the top in your areas of concentration so that you can stand out from the crowd. Look at sites that you admire, and even physical products (like Apple products or Leica cameras) to get a sense of how they take something complex and make it easier and more pleasant to interact with.

Anyone can add more features to a web site or product, thereby making it more complex. The real genius is making your site/product user friendly and navigable to the average person without having to educate them on its use.

Like anything in life, to get good at something will take perseverance and dedication.

    Good luck!

w3schools is good for reference. There's loads of tutorials online and even youtube. What I would recommend is Start with basic HTML - then start learning how to link CSS - Then you can learn how to program other languages like PHP, JavaScript.

The quickest way to learn it is to do it. The more you do it, the more you'll get used to it.

    Hello Ahmed,

If you want to learn about CSS and HTML, then as per my opinion you must go with w3schools.com and html.net as they provide live examples with all the topics related to PHP, CSS and HTML.

All the best with your learning!

The first and the one that you should start learning is not to ask before you actually learn. All basic HTML/CSS sources or references are indentical (h1, h2, h3 .... P ....).

The barebone of web is Html language, so you should start learning it first before jumping around and seeking to Javascript, PHP .....

You could actually learn CSS along with HTML to give the juice to the plain language, Html.

The one thing that you could do now is to understand the concept and theory about websites. How a website is created? What involving to create a static website?

Don't jump over the boat. Just start learning the basic and understand it all before jumping around.

I believe html and css should be taught as onje. After you learn basic structual elements, then attributes start blending in style rules. For starters avoid inline styles.

Different people learn differently, for some people, the best way to learn is to actually build a simple site along with your learning. I found reading books, youtube tutorial, and online site can only get you so far. The html/css/php are not difficult language in and of itself, that is when you look at codelines in isolation, they can become complex when in an actual site, simple things are linked together, and it's the navigation and hierarchy that make it difficult. I suggest you maybe start building a site (perhaps with WP) once you have gone through the material suggested by others. Also, once you are building a site, Firebug plugin in Firefox is immensely useful IMO.

      Your right there Kubic.

I actually learned web design by using Dreamweaver and learning from the hints it gave me. I found that it was indispensable when giving me hints during teh coding of my css and helped me along to remember stuff.

I don't do videos tuturials much and find that continuing to practice and generally ripping other peoples code apart and having a dig around is the best way for me.

      Learn from others.

Don't go to college to learn this stuff, waste of time as they are generally pretty far behind in terms of the fast growth of the Internet!

    Visit the nearest library.

There are tons of how to design books.

Invest time in learning and producing great websites.

Another valuable resource is YouTube or instructables websites.

Another way is to view the source codes of websites that you really like.

If you are hardworking enough go through line by line to see how different codes work for different parts of the website.

Try Firefox browser there are some plugins that allow you to do this with ease.

I am guessing by most of the answers that people don't think using web editors like dream weaver and word press are the way to go for a beginner but wouldn't it be a way to get some sites up and maybe making some money while they study coding?

As I mentioned, I actually learned to code by using dreamweaver.

I understand your thinking but as a beginner don't expect to make money while learning to code. Its a tough world out there and competition is pretty fierce, as a beginner you would be expected to do your first portfolio jobs for free to get your name out.

Obviously we are always learning in this job, and it does get easier! But in the beginning don't expect to get paid. I was a chef for 15 years and studied my craft on my lunch breaks during 12 hour split shifts and i didn't get paid for three years. When I landed a job in an agency things improved, but I had to then learn to build sites very quickly and perfectly. (I am allowed the odd mistake!)

The easiest way to do this is to ask around, ask your family or friends if they would like a site done for free. Get it on your portfolio, it won't be great but you can improve it over time.

When it comes to your own portfolio, be creative and try to stand out. And dont use templates unless its for inspiration!

After learning basic HTML and CSS, you may then want to download some free html templates and play around with them.

I can still remember when I started learning web development. If I see a good looking website, I normally viewed the source code, copied the codes and pasted them to an html editor.

I then study each of the codes and just play around.

    More power.

I suggest you to learn by try to build a site.

I remember when I was studying like you.
I learned from ebook and i think it waste time.
Cuz it have a lot of code what i don't want to know.
When I use it to build real web and I want to do something
(such as I want to create upload file box).
I ask it from google and my old knowledge from ebook it did not help me.

And that is reason why i suggest you to learning by build a real site.

I know everyone keeps talking about coding but I have read in a couple articles that you don't have to be a coder to be a designer and I know this to be true, I know a lady in Florida who started using wordpress a few years ago to make a website for her husbands plumbing business, now she works full time making local small business websites on wordpress, she knows nothing about coding and sometimes ask people about things on wordpress. Of course she uses templates exclusively but for the small businesses it seems to be working fine. She is making more doing this then she did with her old full time job.
