Ask not what the Warrior Forum can do for you...

This is for the new folks...

When you join any group for the first time, it's best to spend some time observing to learn the rules and etiquette.

For example, think back to when you went to someone's house for the first time. I bet you learned the "house rules" by observation (such as whether you should take your shoes off). And you probably didn't argue with the owner over his or her own rules.

Same thing here.

And just like when you go to someone else's house, you play nice. You don't act like a jerk and call other guests names. Your best bet is to play nice here, too.

The WF has very few posted rules. You'll see them at the top of the forum as well as most sub-forums you visit. Read all the "sticky" posts and follow 'em.

There are also the forum rules you agreed to when you joined the forum. You may want to take a moment to review them by clicking here.

Aside from the posted rules, there are other various other recommendations, suggestions and guidelines to make your membership here pleasant.

Below are a few threads addressing some of these issues. Take note of who started most of these threads (Paul Myers) -- he's been involved with this forum in one way or another pretty much since its inception, so he's one to pay close attention to.

Who are the mods?

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...moderator.html

and

These are the folks who help clean up individual forums: WarriorForum - Internet Marketing Forums - Show Groups

There are some super mods not listed on that page, but it gives you an idea.

How do you post a WSO? When can you start PM'ing? What is the War Room? How much does it cost to become a member? Answers here:

http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...id-status.html

BTW, talking about your current and future WSOs is usually considered pre-selling your WSO, and those sorts of posts tend to disappear (along with other self-promotional posts).

Legal questions don't tend to get removed, but they often pose a risk to the OP. Here's a warning straight from Allen (the forum owner):

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...vice-here.html

Why requests for testimonials and reviews tend to get deleted:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-requests.html

Why posts about breaking a site's TOS are likely to get removed:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...sites-tos.html

Related to that...

Here's why certain backlink products and services are no longer allowed:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...es-lately.html

"Watch me" threads and similar threads that the OP frequently updates tend to get locked or even deleted. Here's why:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ught-back.html

and

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...e-threads.html

Everyone gets their posts and threads deleted. Just move on. Don't repost your thread and don't post a new thread asking why the others were deleted. Here's just one thread of a gazillion that explains why mods don't tell you when/why they delete a post:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...planation.html

Avatars bordering on porn tend to get deleted. But you'll also raise suspicion about yourself if you use an avatar to misrespresent yourself. For example:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...g-avatars.html

Buying a WSO is like buying any other product anywhere else -- it's at your own risk. You can reduce your risk by using common sense and the following bit of advice to protect yourself:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...not-order.html

Here's a good description of the type of folks that don't last long here:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ckroaches.html

Here's why new folks who choose to be anonymous aren't taken seriously here:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...26-enough.html

Political discussion gets the ax pretty fast:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...owed-here.html

Here's why your post may disappear if you use junk characters in the title to attract attention:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...attention.html

Some folks come on this board for the first time when they're down to their last dime. They start threads about it. We get a lot of those. Some are nuked because they look like e-begging. Some stay -- you can find them using a forum search (so you can get ideas for your situation).

Here's a good thread about how to raise money during tough times:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...desperate.html

Now let me boil all that stuff down to one line:

"And so my fellow Warriors, ask not what your forum can do for you - ask what you can do for your Warrior Forum community."

  • Great thread.

A couple unspoken rules that might be beneficial to a person's experience here:

    1. Don't post a REPLY until you've been reading posts here for a week or more.

    2. Don't create a THREAD until you've been reading and replying here for a month or more.

Become a REAL part of the community first and everything else will work out fine.

Edit: OK, this might be a little harsh. Didn't mean it to be so. I think Evil Kevin took over for a few minutes there. I took my anti-evil medication and I'm all better now.

I should have said "make sure you are familiar with the forum before you start posting."

Err... Why are those rules? I have never heard such a rule, on the other hand, I would encourage new people to dive right in and start talking to others...

To the OP, nice post I hope it gets stickied, but then how do you get new people to read the stickies .

I happen to think Kevin's so-called rules are a little excessive as far as the time required. I also think the spirit is good.

Spending at least a few hours reading posts to get the lay of the land is a good idea. Jumping in with guns blazing can get you in trouble.

Would you go into a bar mitzvah and immediately start a conversation about the latest Mel Gibson movie? Or worse yet, spraying your review?

Would you go into Yankee Stadium and start hawking Boston Red Sox merchandise or tickets? I'd use soccer teams, but I don't follow closely enough to know the heated rivalries. Feel free to substitute two clubs who hate each other.

One reason you sometimes see threads about how the old-timers pick on new members is that the new member jumped right in and started posting away, not realizing they were doing anything wrong. When they get corrected, some of them feel picked on. The ones who learn from it and go on to become valuable members probably could have avoided the drama by spending a little time lurking and easing into participation.

Exactly -- and you gave good examples. Folks don't always realize that the "social etiquette" that applies to their participation in offline communities applies to their participation in online groups and communities, too.

As for how to get new members to read the rules and the sticky posts? The answer is clear. The thread titles need to be changed to "How to make $51,922.94 before you go to bed tonight."

That ought to get a lot of eyeballs on those threads.

          Cheers,

Your "unspoken rules" are severe even after you edited your post. This not your forum nor is it exclusive.

Someone could be in a bind and finds the Warrior forum and they sincerely need help and want to ask some questions. They have every right to get the help the need and fire away with some questions. If their motives are to be are to ask questions and contribute -- and not just promote their wares, like 90% of existing warriors, they should jump right in.

Here are some "unspoken rules" I have for existing members:

      1) Don't post thank you spam!

      2) Uncheck your signature when posting a question or comment on a WSO. People pay for these ads, and it shows a lack of consideration and respect to post your links.

      3) Uncheck your signature if comment is only one sentence long. You're probably just spamming and you know it.

      4) Be patient and courteous to all members, especially newcomers who may simply unintentionally overlooked rules.

      5) Do not give a flaming review of a WSO just because you thought the content was good, without actually testing out the strategy. You could actually be leading people astray. You can't assume and assert the content will help you or others make a lot of money if you haven't made money with it.

I probably have more but those are on the top of my head.

"make sure you are familiar with the forum before you start posting" is severe?

If someone has questions that urgent, a quick scan of the subjects on discussion in the main forum can tell someone if they might be in the right place.

        As for your five rules...

        1) Should be a given.

        2) Makes sense, good reminder.

        3) Objection, calls for a conclusion by the witness

        4) Another good reminder. On the other hand, there's no requirement to suffer fools gladly. And after a few posts, it's usually fairly easy to tell which is which.

        5) Another sensible suggestion. Corollary: if you've used something similar, but not what's on offer, disclose it. Tell people your comments are based on past experience and simply reading/watching the product on offer. If you have no experience, restrict your comments to the structure/organization/presentation of the material without endorsing the strategy.

Possibly you are upset because you think I edited my "rules" that were originally posted. I did not. The only edit I did was the part after the "edit."

I think it's disingenuous to get called out on a post them edit the content so no one else can see what you wrote originally. I left my original content so people could see what dumb things I originally wrote.

That's a nice way to extend a little courtesy to those offering WSOs. Thanks for that reminder.

I think it was sbucciarel who once talked about someone who was spamming her WSO threads for apparent sig exposure. The guy was running a WSO very similar to sbucciarel's -- and so he went into all her WSO threads (and others with similar offers) and made a one-line comment.

He wasn't a customer. He wasn't even a prospect. He was just someone looking to get more eyeballs on his WSO by posting in similar WSOs.

        Cheers,

This post should join the stickies at the top of the forum. Well done, Becky!

    I'd like to add:

    > If you just want to acknowledge the contribution of a poster, learn to use the "Thanks" button (located at the bottom right of each post, except for your own and those you've already thanked). Doing so helps keep things tidy so people can get the meat of the thread without having to scroll past endless one-line posts.

If you do want to post a written thanks, try to add something else to the conversation at the same time.

I've always been a strong advocate for the "watch, listen (or read) & learn" theory & I love your "learn the house rules" analogy...I hope the newer & many of the not so old members find the value of this thread.

  • Hey everyone, this is a great post!!! I also notice how I am the only newbie posting on here. I guess because I learned from my IMer husband early on not to ask stupid questions if I do not want to look stupid. HE can answer those... (I think I have said that in other threads) But it does not get old to me. I learn new things everyday here at WF, and I appreciate when experienced warriors like Becky take time out to GUIDE us beginners on how to do things right. UNFORTUNATELY, not everyone can take criticism lightly or as a learning tool. Most get offended, and if you notice, only a few last past the 20th post!!! ... Hey I guess I am one of the FEW...
