Website from scratch with syndicated content

Hey guys,

I've seen here in the past where someone buys a domain, throws on a theme and it's suddenly got tons of content (news, "opinion" pieces, etc). Some of these websites were launched right here on the forum in the years past.

Always curious. So how is it possible? Because I don't think they populated the website with content they wrote overnight lol

    Perhaps you are thinking of 'curated' content? Auto blogs, feeds, etc? Not the same as syndication.



    Use forum search to find quite a few threads about curated sites, curation, etc.

    In general, I would never use this. As someone who professionally does SEO that's a setup for that pages rank to get...destroyed quite literally. Duplicate content is not taken kindly by Google, and I doubt it uses correct canonical tags.

    But if you're just trying to flip it...I guess it's ok.

      Plan is to sit on it for the first few years and not really do any SEO. But if someone were to visit it, they'd see content. Eventual goal is to flip it and/or turn it into an SEO site. But still unable to find info on how to go about this...

        If you don't care about Google dings, just create a scraper and pull info from multiple different sites (so you're not constantly pinging the same site and you get 'banned') and populate it with that information.

      As regards duplicate content, you're both right and wrong.


      Google doesn't look kindly upon duplicate content means that it only shows one page in the SERP's.



      However, which version it shows has nothing to do with duplicate anything. By that I mean that sometimes it shows the original, sometimes a copy. Has to do with SEO of the page the content is on and of the site... Best SEO wins, even if it is not the original.

        I wouldn't bank on that. Considering Google doesn't like plagiarized stuff being published, I wouldn't bet against the fact that that same article was first published a year ago on another site and has existed there, and then all of a sudden you got the same article but your domain name has more authority then Google simply banishes the little guy who originally came up with the article to rank 501229829. Because if you think about it, if that were the way Google did things, then all pages that already have a solid page authority and domain authority could hi-jack all the little company's content and just use it as their own because they're already completely mercilessly crushing that smaller, and absolutely unknown blog writer that's putting out good content.

        You do bring up a good point though that I'm definitely going to do a bit of research on. My rule, since I clients websites reputation is in my hands, is that I never copy anything ever, and anything that I don't produce myself I do an intense net scan for to make sure that article doesn't already exist.

        But good thing to point out. Thanks for the input.

      Got any other suggestions besides WordPress? I hate seeing people use WordPress. It is LITERALLY the MOST vulnerable platform on the internet. I'd rather make a website with notepad than with WP.

      WordPress is easy, but if you're serious, you would never use WordPress. But if you're just popping up stuff to test something it's great. I'd never implement that or suggest it for any serious endeavor.

      But it's great if you want to teach your visitors how to get malware off of their computer. Because that's inevitably what WordPress sites end up delivering to the visitors.

    It sounds like you're talking about an automated blog, where a website pulls the content from another website using the RSS feed. Obviously, the content is not original, so it does not stand a chance of ranking in Google. However, there are some clever ways to profit with automated blogs, especially if the stories posted have a "viral" element to them.

      Thanks and you're right, but creating seems to be the thing. The curator plugin though @savidge seems like it just brings in RSS. Would that be fine with what I'm looking to do?

    Maybe they brought a website from some one else with content because there is no way content is going to popup.Further more you can set up a fully functional site without having a domain.

    If you are trying to rank on Google and other search engines (organic traffic) then you must have unique content, do keyword research, search engine optimization and so on. This way you will have a small chance to get on page #1 over time.

    If you get traffic to your site without Google or other search engines, then you can have duplicate content.

    I have never understood the concept of automated blogging.

    I am sure it is using curated content. As far as SEO ranking and fresh content is considered, can be tackled through syndication. However, I am not very confident about the effects on SEO rankings.

    There are several autoblog plugins available for wordpress which fetches content from any rss feed. And you can create a rss feed for virtually any website and feed burner.

    This can be scraped content. Some of my blog articles has also been stolen, but not anymore

    In my opinion, you must have 100% unique content on your blog / website. Google and other search engines WILL NOT index duplicate content. So, if you are looking to get highly targeted traffic from your blog/website, the best way is to do proper keyword research first and then write content using your keyword phrase. Also, for those who are non- English native speakers, there is a great site called TextBroker.com.
