When is a marketing method a step too far

I’ve just come across a marketing campaign that both amused me and annoyed me at the same time. I really think this person has lost the plot as far as adding numbers to his mailing list.

What he had done was this……

*Submitted a link on the warrior forum inviting people to download his free e-book
*They were then sent to his Twitter profile with another link
*Then they were sent to his Blog to another link
*At this point they clicked on the link and was taken to a opt-in page
*They then arrived at an OTO (one time offer) and once they had confirmed their email address received the free e-book
*After just one day they had also received 6 broadcasts from this person

On the warrior I couldn’t get over how many complaints for this person that had arrived. I can see what the marketer was trying to achieve he had recently joined Twitter and wanted lots of new followers, extra traffic to his Blog and most importantly he wanted numbers on his mailing list.

I would never even consider doing this and at first I never believed what people were saying so I signed up myself under one of my pen names and was astonished by the level of links that I came across. All that he was setting out to achieve could have very easily been done without all this messing about and people would have been grateful to him for it. Also after the hassle I went through there was no way on this earth that I was going to stay subscribed and I would how many others felt the same.

I would have put a link on the warrior to my Blog, sent them to my OTO and then through to the product. At this point I would have offered them the opportunity to sign up for my seven day course for free that would have included all the information that appeared in the emails that I received over the day. I would have also included in my Warrior offer details of my new twitter account and people would have still joined me as new followers.

I would also put a link maybe once a day on twitter inviting them through to my offer on my Blog and that would have still been acceptable to my customers.

I appreciate that we all want to receive free products and it often involves opting in but at the same time we shouldn’t feel like we have joined the circus. Plus we are often really busy working so do we really have the time to give it justice!

Following this persons example would only lead to lots of un-subscribers so what would you really achieve from something like this. I certainly will not be following his methods and find it hard to believe that someone that has been in the business longer than me would do this. The reason I haven’t named and shamed him is because I don’t want to help him with his traffic as quite frankly he doesn’t deserve it. Once upon a time I really respected this person and would have gladly added his product to my MembersZone but not anymore. This is why you should be careful before following in the foot steps of some of these Gurus.

To your online success
