Continuing on in our WordPress tutorial series for Wordpress websites, we now find ourselves a feature that, no hyperbole intended, has few equals concerning the success (or lack thereof) with every online marketing effort - content! We’ll spend the next several posts dealing with content and depending upon level of thoroughness, decide whether to move forward with others on the subject.

Wordpress whether free or simple script version is known as a ‘content management system’ or CMS. The first two words (content management) describe what is at the heart of its founding and ongoing development. Of course, such a terrible choice would never be necessary but if asked what is most important about a website, whether Wordpress built or other, any experienced webmaster without equivocation will say CONTENT.

Content is meant to generate website traffic regardless of industry. Internet usage by the wider public became commonplace around 2001. At that time, the Internet was referred to as Web 1.0. This definition was used to communicate what was most critical at the time - uploading information.

Today and not surprisingly, the reality of online life is much different. As with anything, it has evolved from 1.0 to what is currently known today as Web 2.0. This latest version is all about ‘sharing’ the information which through 1.0 (and ongoing efforts) has built online communities around topics of interest.
Launched in 2003, Wordpress has done more than any other CMS to shape the Internet into what it has become. At last estimate, it accounts for more than 63 million websites with more being added daily. Without getting too deep into the ‘nuts and bolts’ of this platform, we’ll focus on why content to any webmaster is critical to the overall success of an online venture.

Too often, those with dreams of instant wealth believe it enough to provide content that is strictly direct sales oriented. Of course, most crash and burn but from their tragedy comes an important lesson – building relationships must proceed building ‘balance sheets’.
More than anything, people search for information on products before committing to its actual purchase. Any content, regardless of industry geo-targeted keywords, must establish your expertise in a particular subject. The goal of establishing expertise is increasing credibility and from that comes the ultimate pre-cursor to spending money – TRUST!

We could give many suggestions on what is most important to communicate through posts and pages however, and most importantly, it is necessary to along with expertise, let your personality be visible. For some webmasters not given to being personable, this could be dangerous however, for most the opportunity establishes a digital version of an ‘in person’ (personal) relationship.

Let's do an experiment - think about the last blog content you read and thought – “Wow – that was great information”.
Perhaps the end result was bookmarking and/or sharing it with others or maybe even with a slick call to action inserted by its writer, you opted in to receive future communications.
Next - think about the last content you read and didn't even make it to the second paragraph because it was so awful. Unlike the content remembered, it is probable that what you considered awful was so much so, you can’t even remember who wrote it nor where it was located.

As you formulate a plan to produce content, it is important to note that the best of the lot may not necessarily be the most error-free but that which communicates a writer’s personality. In our next post on WordPress tutorials, we will dig into proper use of posts versus pages.
