You may have thought, before beginning your business anyway, home based business management was easily accomplished and as simple as ‘snake-oil salespeople’ presented it. Very few searching for home based business options haven’t heard this sales pitch; “Make $1,000 per day while in your pajamas and drinking coffee”. However, you’ve now began to earn a little bit of income and are just as stressed out working from home as when you were competing in the corporate rat race. Some of this is just a part of being an entrepreneur while most is a result of not understanding, exactly, what you are trying to do. Showing up at someone else’s corporate job, doing your work, collecting a paycheck and going home only requires a little bit of responsibility on your part.

With your own business, however, success or failure depends entirely on you! Many think that working at home somehow shields them from the realities of managing a business and quickly discovered nothing is further from true. I began working at home, as well as anywhere I could sneak of few minutes in, and discovered the same. What kept me from throwing in the towel, especially in the days when I earned no income despite investing great effort - was understanding and believing hard work (for me) would be worth it.

I must admit at times, everything seemed to be falling apart. Through no fault of anyone except me, my business was suffering because I was spending too much time on non-management related tasks such as deciding to take the rest of the day off. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time for this approach but when done too often business will suffer. First, if this is your experience, it is quickly corrected but not by spending a lot of time trying to catch up.

Every work at home entrepreneur goes through a learning curve and one is finding balance between work and relaxation. Although many have been told differently, there is no magic formula when trying to figure this out. What works best for your situation is measured in three ways; testing, testing and afterward, more testing. The work at home lifestyle, when compared to the experience of corporate slavery has the ability to be molded to fit the personality of the business owner. I live in a very small town in Iowa. Recently, I relocated my company and family from the enormous stress of a large mega-city; Denver, Colorado.

When we moved to this small Iowa town, I expected small business owners, most having no traditional office space and working from home, to take the same approach as the ‘every busy’ and competitive entrepreneurs in Colorado. Was I in for a huge surprise!

The prevailing attitude with both my personal and business service providers is much more laid back and many seem to not be as ‘money hungry’ as their Denver counterparts. In Colorado, if I needed, for example, storm windows put on my house I’d get a quote and 48 hours later service providers were ready to begin work.

My Iowa experience has been much different. I’ve had to call many service providers to just get one to show up and further, after receiving a quote for services, few seem to care about earning another $3-$4K and blow me (and my money) off.

I won’t pass judgment on which approach is better but will say they are very different. That is how you must view business management as an entrepreneur. Find out what works, build processes on proven models and grow your business.
