In this blog post, we’ll focus on one home based business idea - becoming an online tutor and instructor. It is the dream of millions to leave the corporate rat race in pursuit of launching their own company and earning a great living. Nevertheless, for most, it remains a dream and as these ‘dreamers’ get older, they become disillusioned with corporate life but never doing anything about it. There are few things which cause as much bitterness in this life as an unfulfilled dream.

It isn't so much that a dream remains unfulfilled rather it was never pursued to begin with or worse, not followed through on until the end. There are statistics which say 90% of small businesses started each year end in failure. Of those that succeed, a further 10% of that number will fail within five years. To both groups of seeming failures, we say bravo! You lived the dream and it may not have turned out as expected, but effort was put forth. Why not try something else NOW?

Let’s not patronize anyone by using an untrue cliché which says “the only people who fail are those who never try.” Tell that to athletes who place second in their respective competitions.
Even among businesses, whether at home or located outside of the home, entrepreneurs experience some form of failure on a regular basis. When starting a home based business you can expect to experience failure in some form or fashion. What has this to do with starting a home-based business as an online tutor and instructor?

What is most important to success is creating content. If you fail to create engaging content, your business will fail! Whether video tutorials, surveys, instructional articles, quizzes etc. - you must be able to create content which online learners, clients and customers will pay for.
As a premier training partner of the online learning website located at Udemy.com, we’ll share, with our readers, Sage advice given to Udemy during a recent phone conference. “For instructors and online tutors to become successful - they must learn to document all marketable life experiences.” When our company was founded years ago, we began with four or five online courses which mostly focused on the WordPress Content Management System (CMS).

For those who may not know what this is, it is a website and content management program used by more than 85 million businesses (worldwide) to host, build and set-up ecommerce businesses online. However, it was apparent that our four or five initial courses on the subject wouldn’t be enough to scale up in a way we’d imagined. A skills inventory was taken and it was discovered that our content creator possessed more than 40 individual business management skills; all of which could be made into online video tutorial and instructional content.

As was shared with Udemy - success as an online instructor and tutor is simply about cataloging every skill set an entrepreneur has and marketing it to others who do not possess those skills yet desire to learn. With more than 8,000 instructors, 98% of which have only one course hosted with Udemy, apparently this message isn’t taken seriously to the detriment of those who ignore it.

Taking just one industry as an example, here are just of few skills any corporate employee serving in lower or mid-level management function can create an online tutoring business with:

1. Ability to send and receive e-mail - for those using Microsoft Outlook, you’ll understand that it is not only an email software program used in your company but one that millions around the world desire to learn. Even the most basic course on Microsoft Outlook, properly marketed anyway, will yield profits.

2. Creating word processor documents - it doesn't matter whether Microsoft Office or Apple’s word processor program(s), most supervisory employees have created some form of word processor document. There are many who desire to learn both office programs and will pay for the privilege.

3. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets - there are those who create functional spreadsheets with complicated math formulas and then others who simply type information into those spreadsheets during a workday. Whichever category you fit in - there are online learners willing to pay for your knowledge.

Should we go on? Before setting up a website or writing even one blog post on your preferred topic, take a simple skills inventory. You will find that you are much more capable of producing multiple courses than ever imagined.
