But I don't know if what I am doing is right? My understanding is that this will help my ranking in the SE but I am not sure how to "optimize"? Max said he optimzed my pips blog but any help would be appreciated with the others There has to be ways to beat the learning...

Google AdWords can be a minefield for those who are unsure what they are doing. I found 3 groups on facebook that relate to the niche that i've chosen. In the discussion area, i've pointed them to my site. In hindsight, it probably would have been better to direct them to my articles. BUT... i'm still waiting for the articles to be approved.
