Ever since my first home computer back in 1997, I’ve been trying all the tips and tricks available all over the internet, to make my computer faster. I’ve tried everything! Registry scanners, virus scanners, junk file removers, language cutters, ram upgrades, spyware removers… The list goes on literally forever. Most of these tips resulted in nothing but a lot of my time wasted running scan after scan, search after search, delete this, install that, wipe this wipe that, wax on wax off, and not to mention the never ending reboots.
Buying a new computer was always an option, an option that I exercised quite often (3 new computers in 4 years = $$$). That’s not too crazy if you think about it. Some tech companies replace their employees’ computers every year just to keep production pumping. But my budget is not as big as most companies.
Fast forward to 2007 when I decided to switch over to mac. I bought myself a brand new state of the art MacBook Pro. Great decision I am now a mac lover, sorry Bill. Hey, I still have love for PC’s, as that’s what I use at work. But over the years, I found even my mac slowing down more and more. So back to the internet I went searching for fixes. Some helped some didn’t.
Then, just as I was running out of hard drive space and considering getting a new computer (again), I ended up having my entire logic board replaced by Apple, for free (some kind of part recall). So I figured, I basically have a new computer now so why not just get a bigger hard drive, save myself some money, and just keep my trusty old MacBook Pro even if it is getting a little sluggish. I began my search for a newer faster bigger hard drive. I noticed that SSD’s (Solid State Drives) were everywhere. They’re being offered as an upgrade option in new computers, they’re for sale on all my usual shopping sites, Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, you know, everywhere!
So what’s the big frigging deal about SSD’s?
First of all, they are already standard in most of the smaller electronics.
You know how when your computer is ‘working’, you’ll hear that little clicking sound inside the laptop or desktop? Well, that’s the little arm inside the hard drive, literally searching back and forth across the disk as it spins, kind of like an old school record player.
Well, SSD’s aka flash drives don’t have anything moving in them. So when they need to search for something, it takes just an instant to pull up the file and send it to your screen, making it much, much, faster than the traditional hard drives. Compare the difference between fast forwarding to a song on a cassette tape, and skipping to a song on your mp3 player. No comparison right?
Since SSD’s don’t have moving parts, they use less energy, helping your battery last longer (if on a laptop).
If nothing moves, there is no noise. Completely quiet, shhhh!
No moving parts means less heat coming off of your computer. Less heat also extends the overall life of your computer and your lap ☺.
If you’ve ever broken your computer from dropping it, it was probably your hard drive that was damaged. The moving parts inside can’t handle any dropping. Not a problem with an SSD. It’s shock resistant because there’s nothing to break.
So, for less than it cost’s to take your best guy or girl out for dinner, you can bring your sluggish computer back to life and feel it operate faster than it did the day you took it out of the box.
Watch my 5 year old computer shut down and reboot in 30 seconds!

Don’t worry about replacing your drive, it’s all plug and play. You can make an exact copy of your current hard drive onto the new one in just a few clicks of the mouse.
If you can put a key a lock and open the door, you can upgrade your hard drive. There are video tutorials everywhere specific to your computer that will walk you through no problem.
