What are the elements of an effective viral content?

I'd like to open this discussion to learn more about virality and hear what fellow Warriors think about it.
I hope I receive sensible and though-provoking responses here, as it would help me put this in writing.

Here are my questions so far:

1. How can we make things go viral?

Does this always mean that there should always be a story to go by (yellow journalism) or try a method from scratch that hopefully would catch on?

I am asking this because I am interested to know more about the birth and development of memes, vines, satire news and online events.

2. Is this purely accidental or can be manipulated?

Many companies are employing viral marketing strategies in their Integrated Marketing Communication Strategy. Can this truly be fabricated rather than accidental? What do you think makes people want to share stories, pictures and videos? During the course of my observation, a scandal/controversy is mostly the glue that binds a ho-hum story, person or event to a viral content. I would like to know if you believe in these sentiments too.

3. How does Link Baiting and Traffic go hand in hand?

If all you ever wanted was to make a worthwhile content (whether created for this purpose or accidentally shared and spread over the internet), how would you protect your ownership--or in another school of thought, would you rather let it free on the range for the internet to appreciate? Like your gift to the Worldwide web? (I know it's all about the money, but artists like me get fulfillment just by being acknowledge. Money comes second)

I would like to thank in advance everyone who could share an input here.

    1. Luck plays a part. Shock factor. Yellow Journalism, sure why not. Clients always say "I wanna go viral" like it is something you can just flick on.

    2. It needs to not be try hard. You can fake it, that's common - but try-hard is a killer. (forgive me if this is an Aussie expression)

    3. Throw it up on a space YOU control and share from there. Most will be to lazy to corrupt it and borrow themselves. Some will, but start from there.

Chucking it up on a personal FB account will give you some idea of it's viral qualities.

If you try to make something go viral, it probably will not happen.

      Going viral just happens.

Take a look at some of the things that go viral, you can not re-create or create those things

Never have encountered these tools. Thanks for the suggestions.

Emotional triggers? Like anger, dismay, indignation and staged events? Well, I still believe these can be replicated. Artificial virality. Like can it work 30% most of the time?

It's either something incredibly relevant or entertaining to many people, or it's highly controversial. These are usually the biggest elements of a viral post or content.

Don't strive to create viral content all of the time, as Al stated above, they usually just happen. If you are special and unique enough in your market then you've got a head start.

While you shouldn't try to create viral content, try to get reactions from people. Because the more they interact with you and your business, the more popular you'll become.

    There is no bad publicity.

Without a massive budget, it is very, very difficult to force something to go viral.

it is just one of those hit and miss things. You can never know for sure if what you are doing will actually go viral. There are so many factors that need to line up, most of them out of your control.

Your best chance at forcing something viral is a combination of hitting a trend right as it starts, combined with, as someone said above, "an emotional trigger". The rest is out of your control. Either it takes hold and goes viral, or it gains a small amount of traction and then stops.

I also believe viral content, most of the time, simply happens! You would need a good dose of luck to be able to go viral with something.. on the other hand, if you don't manipulate it at least a bit, it's possible that things will cool down real quick..

Tactically speaking, I have found the following work well:
    1) New "Angle". It can be the same old "Subject" and the same old "Theme", but a creatively unique angle makes all the difference.
    2) Great Headline. If you are too negative or too safe, then you will fail. You need to get it just right.
    3) Influencer Adoption. Absolutely critical. I have found 3x+ more adoption whenever Influencers seeded by content on day 1.
