How Would I Approach Hiring My First Blog Writer? (I'm paying per blog post.)

Looking to launch my blog soon, but first I want to put some nice quality content on it.

I'm going to write a couple blog posts a month but I mostly want to be working on the backend of things like create sale funnels, optimizing things, and just ultimately growing my blogging business.

So therefore, I want to hire someone to write about four or five blog posts/articles, and I'll pay them $20 USD each blog post. Is this fair? From my research, it's at the top of the average (which is between $10 - $20).

The thing is, I don't care for the blog post to be lengthy, I just want it to have quality content while genuinely helping the viewer solve a problem and engaging with them. That's it.

I'm in the "make money" niche so the speak, specifically aimed towards aspiring/beginning bloggers looking to create a blog that makes moneys.

I have a list of blog topics that I will send to the prospect who chooses to write them.

All in all, how would I approach this?

Do I go to Upwork (formerly known as Odesk), or can you maybe write them?

Is $100 for five blog posts fair?

Let me know what you all think, I'm still new to this although I have hired someone (web designer), I just haven't hired a blog writer yet. If you could do this job for me, it'll be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Jordan S Daniels

At $20/post regardless of size, you're bound to attract every "writer" and his mother. So I highly suggest you stick to the top rated writers wherever you decide to outsource this. Top rated writers are rated as such for a reason, and investing $100 for only five blog posts (again, regardless of size) sounds like a good reason to be discriminating!

This simply is not true. While $20 per blog is a fair rate for a fairly experienced blogger, you will not attract top names from the industry. There are authority sites that pay $150, $250 and even $500 for top talent that brings a loyal following, so do not confuse the difference between a person that can write and a professional blogger.

With that said, I'm sure you can find a great writer within that budget; you just have to be very specific about your needs and learn to weed through the copy/paste proposals. $20 an article is right there on the fringe where you're starting to pull way from the common, everyday hacks but not quite where you get a professional's attention. So you will have some trial and error experiences before finding the right person.

Personally, I always start looking on Craigslist because I'd much rather find someone local I can look in the face and explain my needs to...but it's very hard to find great local writers (at least in my area it is). So you'll probably end up at Freelancer, Elance and those types of sites....just take your time with the proposal, highlight your exact needs, and put something in the description for the writer to directly reply to.

For example, I often ask something like, "To be considered for this position, please submit three of your most recent published samples plus your salary expectations, where you're located and your average turnaround time."

With just those four things, you're able to see the writer's attention to detail and their ability to follow simple instructions- the ones who DON'T get those steps right never, ever seem to work out. And trust me, that will be around 90% or more of your applicants.

I don't get it... What is the most important aspect of Online Marketing? Its getting traffic correct? How do you plan on doing that? have someone write what, 4 articles a month? Do you honestly think that is going to provide the drive of traffic you need to make your model successful?

If you are not writing every other day at the least.. I would say don't bother. If every article is a potential gateway to a new user.. which is apt to be more successful, 48 articles a year or 180?

I would worry more about developing the traffic first. THEN start to worry about the funnels and optimizing.

Palm trees and drinks on the beach is a pipe dream when it comes to success online. There comes a point you can get there.. but you cant put the cart in front of the horse. you need to put in the work, and develop the success to get there.

Success in ANY and ALL online ventures is traffic.. and if you find it more important to focus on anything and everything other than that, I am sorry to say, failure is on your horizon.

I understand every word of what you said but this post wasn't about how to get traffic. The thing is, I've made money online before with marketing techniques and I have traffic strategies mapped out to implement right now, such as PPC ads and more.

I know that traffic comes first before conversions; this post just wasn't about that.

So... is this a good idea, or not?

I'm not just looking to pick up the first person who runs to this offer but I want them write maybe one blog post and I'll evaluate it from there and continue from that point on.

Like I said, I'm just looking for quality content regardless of size. I don't think $20 is low at all for a quality post either.

Oh, absolutely. It's a great idea and people do it all the time. And testing writers with one article is a sound approach as well. In fact, it's often the only way you'll find the writer who can write the way you need. $20 is a fine price to start with too.

Upwork requires a lot of trials and errors to find a good writer. WarriorForum is actually a good place for you to find a good writer for the 'making money' niche as most members are already experienced in the topic. Your rate is fair and you have a good way to test drive the articles so I'd say you are good to go

Fine, I'll be the one to say it.

You say in your OP that you're still new to this blog thing but you're going to run a website teaching others to make money from blogging.

    Like, really?

Sounds like a good idea but you are going to need a lot more than 5 blog posts to get any decent traffic. Being consistent is probably the most important thing to get your site indexed and you should probably be adding 2-3 articles a week for the 1st few months to get things going and to get Google's attention. I've been adding about 1 2000+ word post a week for the last 3-4 months and I'm still working on adding content to build up my ranks in Google. It can take about 1-2 years to really get much results from them but the most successful blogs are the ones that stick with it this long. After you have been blogging for 1-2 years, you should have a lot more backlinks and also get way more brand recognition. For me, while price should not be your primary basis in hiring a quality writers. This is only a good way to attract quality writers but you still need to put a qualifications on the kind of writer you're looking for.

Here's a few tips that you can use.

1.) Create a very detailed description on the kind of writer that you are looking for. For example:
Writing Style (Personal , Professional, Non-Formal etc.)
    Must be well researched?
Do they need to include images?
    How long is the article?

2.) Should at least have written an article on tops website once?
3.) How long would they deliver?
    4.) Ask for reference

$20 a post is a pretty good price. I'm sure you will attract a ton of writers. Hopefully good ones. If you're going to be spending money on your blog posts make sure you spending lots of time on the backend getting things in order. No need to be wasting money on blog posts if you aren't doing the other things required to get your blog to where you want it to be.

    Best Wishes!

$20 per post is a good amount for a good writer. I recommend iwriter.com. Hire some Elite writer and get your work done. You can simply reject the content if it is not of desired quality.

Hi there! I am a writer myself, and I consider 20$/300-500-word article fairly reasonable to start with.Although, any quality writer will bound to charge more as you go. I certainly would. Avoid Upwork:there are just too many scumbags there, trust me. I have been working on Freelancer.com,but I am starting to look for alternatives as the bidding system only works for so long. Although, you may find some talent on Freelancer if you look rather carefully.Just check EVERY SINGLE review and make sure the person has at least 50+ reviews from many different clients.

    Good luck!

    Cheers.

I don't think this will work. The most valuable part of the blogging equation and the hardest part to master is engaging content.

How many words do you want this article to be? 400 to 600 words would be minimum.

How long would it take to write a decent article of this length, including researching, planning, writing and checking. I would expect at least 3 to 4 hours and may be longer if it is to have an angle and be interesting. That is only 5 dollars an hour. What level of writer works for that.

I suspect that an aspiring blogger who has the skills and knowledge to write decent articles may rather employ a technical grunt to do the back end work.

If you want someone to write 5 "decent" articles per month for you. I would suggest you agree the article plans and specs for the articles and the time it will take for them to complete the articles. Then the fee, which is likely to be quite a bit higher than 20 dollars.

Otherwise save your 20 dollars and pull your articles from free sources. They won't be any worse than your bespoke 20 dollar piece, which may well come from there anyway with a bit of word spinning.

Cheap is never always crap. I should know, because I am one of the cheapest writers in this forum. $20 per post is alright. In fact, I and many of my fellow WF writers would step on heads to get your business.

Hire someone who can write meaty and juicy pieces of content, without the frills and the yoohoos.

And the best way to find out is to test the waters with one article. Always ask for a live sample, one that you will only pay for if it meets your criteria. Interview the writer thoroughly, check for social proof and read reviews from previous clients.

    Good luck!

$20 for a standard 500 words article seems awfully high in my opinion. For that price I would expect a well written article by an credentialed American author, with full research included.
