Not sure how much I trust this story, but it does have a good moral.

That idea is actually quite awesome. I don't think any restaurant/shop/retailer would object to getting free flyers for his establishment with a little advertisement on it. Just need to find the right offline/online combo. Pizza with netflix works great.

While the OP has some severe credibility issues, the basic method has been working far longer than the Internet has been around.

One of the diners I used to frequent got free placemats and takeout menus for years by allowing other businesses in town to place ads. The placemats were actually more like a miniature Yellow Pages for the town.

Even my local power company is in on the act. The ads aren't included with the actual bill, but they do defray printing and postage costs by including fliers for other businesses in with the monthly statement.

While the story itself might be bull twang, the method itself can work well. Heck, even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then.

The method works. Just not exactly as outlined, from my experience.

As John rightly points out, there is indeed a credibility issue here, but the method is an old one and began doing the rounds on IM forums at around the time period the OP talks about. Varying degrees of success appeared to be enjoyed and first-hand I can confirm that it did indeed deliver very strong ROI. Around about the time in question, CB removed movie downloads from their marketplace, NetFlix never being one of them, due to legal issues affecting these websites. I forget the loophole, but CB found it, merrily danced through it, and shortly after their removal, few months tops, the same download products appeared under different names. During that time period of absence quite a few people jumped ship to other networks but similar impressive results remained elusive to the majority, as far as I know. In the intervening years, better methods have been jumped upon and, as a result, become very much saturated. If you've ever searched for a TV episode or a movie on Youtube or Dailymotion, you'll know at least one of the superior methods.

Can the method still work? As John rightly points out, logic would dictate the affirmative. The trouble you'll encounter is those mentioned saturated methods. When the methods become saturated, so do the products commonly associated with them. Paying a single figure to download more than half a million movies and TV shows was big news half a decade ago. Grabbed attention. Pulled in easy signups. These days? Not so much. People understand how the sites work and services like NetFlix and Amazon Prime are, due to the brands behind them, far more trusted and therefore make those other products a harder sell (not impossible, just harder, and harder means weaker ROI). There is however some good news.

While the OP's post is outdated (sorry, OP), and while the twists have been omitted, aside from the paying for the menu twist which was rather generous, the model does have legs and works across numerous markets. We very rarely get a half decent method that isn't deleted on WF. To anyone feeling inspired today, I suggest you do what no one else is going to do for you: fill in the blanks.
