Do You Prefer Email Or Facebook Connect?

Hey,

I have been using email marketing for years now.

Lately I've seen a bunch of sites that have users logging in and accessing content via "Facebook Connect".

I was hoping someone could explain the pros & cons of using Facebook Connect as a method of managing registrations and logins! I don't see why a company would want someone's Facebook over their email.

What do you think?

Looking forward to your reply,

~Sean

IMO, That is just giving people ease of reading contents. As you know if you are already logged in and using FB, then you won't have to login again, just click on 'Connect via FB'. But on the other hand, you will have to register with email, that's a pain for most of the users.

It is just a matter of convenience. Give people options that they prefer - login with Twitter, Facebook or email. And it is up to people to select their login method - you can connect to them in any case... E-mail is getting obsolete.

I'm talking from the standpoint of making money. Isn't an email a lot more valuable then someone logging in using Facebook Connect?

I can send affiliate offers to my email list and ask them for referrals to get more business. How can I do that with FB connect?

You just need to think slightly different when using Facebook for login. You have new tool that work differently than email. Here is for example article that talks about the benefits of using Facebook Connect:

Actually, if your site is scripted right, you can still collect email addresses using FB connect. It takes some work, but it's much more convenient for the user. Plus you receive their email address without them having to actually type in any information. It's all push-button. Push button ease is something to consider as more and more people start browsing with their "push button" devices, Like the iPod touch, iPhone, or Android devices.

            Thanks for the reply!

            1. Do you know if you know if you can pull the email from FB and send it to Aweber?

            2. I don't use my active email adress on my FB. Its a really old email that just gets spammed by faceook and other services. I would assume a lot of people do the same. If this is the case then a lot of those emails would be useless for promotions.

We're planning on building a niche training site with videos.

The model we're looking at is one where the site has 3 levels of content:

            a) totally free - just a few videos and articles that encourage you to register / login with your email or FB Connect.

            b) once logged in you can see a bunch more videos and all of these pages encourage you to sign up for the paid content.

            c) Paid members area - with full content.

A great example of this model is:

            http://TrainWithMeOnline.com

When you click on any of the older videos aside from the ones featured on the homepage, it will say something to the degree of "sorry... you need to register or login to view this video".

Once you register (using FB connect or email/name) and login you can then see a bunch more videos but every page tries to sell you on their full workout programs for $5 per month.

Wouldn't it just be easier to have 1 free content area with a sweet opt-in giveaway to collect emails... and then have every page sell them on the paid members area?

Why go through the hassle of making people login to FB connect to see more free content BEFORE you then try to sell them on your paid members area?

I understand that if you get them to connect via facebook when they take an action you can post this to their wall - awesome free advertising - but is this functionality worth the hassle of setting up a 3 tiered site?

What are the benefits of getting them to register before with FB connect?

You can use the OptinApp to do that.

If you use Wordpress you can also a Facebook Connect plugin to gather the email address and set up the registration on the fly. Then an aWeber plugin to transfer the details to aWeber for the double optin.

Some membership plugins, such as S2Member, will give new members the option to optin to your email list as they're registering. You wouldn't need the aWeber plugin if you go that route.

You have to be a careful which fB Connect plugin you use (some don't feed the "real" email to your WP Site but instead create an altered email. why?, I don't know.)

I use fB mainly for personal stuff so I use my "good" email for fB. I set up my fBaccount so I don't get emails every time something happens on my wall... so no "fB spam".

I think the process will become more useless if people start using faceBook email addresses. But you never know...

Depends on how well you think you can sell it. You could try

              a) "squeeze" type page as a home page

              b) once registered give a short series of free content (perhaps the 3-5 videos that were previously offered before optin, with one new video a month to keep them coming back)

              c) paid content (you could offer at a discounted rate for the first few days then raise the price to a normal fee after the short series is over)

The free content offered in the "free member's area" would be the "sweet opt-in giveaway". The "paid content" descriptions can be seen but a membership must be purchased to view the details.

Just depends on the way you want to lay it out.

You wouldn't have to set up your site that way. Guess they just feel it's necessary.

When using the fB Connect (as a plugin to the registration process of your site) you're allowing people to register/login to your site with one click. fB Connect will transfer all the information in the background. Then they just need to pay.

Whether they use a traditional form or fB Connect they'll need to register to your site to become a member. fB Connect just simplifies that process.

Some membership plugins (well one, oddly the one I work for ) work inside Facebook too, so you can do a facebook landing page which then adds them to an mailing list (either a local one, or a third party one like MailChimp, aWebber or Campaign Monitor). Whilst a full Membership Plugin may be a little over complicated for such a simple requirement, it does mean you have loads of other advantages afterwards.

Thanks for the detailed reply Rashell!

I actually have one of my other websites setup in the same manner, with a squeeze page, then all of the free content and a paid members area. This project is a collaboration with a big company and they aren't fond of squeeze pages. They are in favor of this login process.

I still don't get why a site owner would want visitors to register BEFORE a purchase.

Most shopping cart systems are separate services so you can't use the FB Connect info for the checkout process anyway.

So aside from having it show up on their wall when they "signup", why would any site owner want to make people register? As people said in the replies, I can add a simple FB social plugin that will post any comments they make to their FB. So there doesn't seem to be any real benefit to a sign up process aside from capturing leads.

But you could capture leads with a sweet giveaway and optin box that can be split-tested and optimized. No need for a complicated login system.

Does anyone know why sites like this one I'm referring to ( Workout Routines & Exercises ) use a 3 tierd: free teaser content, sign up & login more free content and paid members area model?

Well its because so many people have facebook now so it makes it a good free marketing technique as if they connect via facebook then the website will appear on their friends news feed, the people seeing it may then click it therefore meaning easy free promotion.

Depends to your convenience, some people still uses Email for updates, messages and alerts from their clients and friends. Although Facebook Connect is becoming more popular these days, and we all know that social networking sites are gaining its popularity. You may use any of the two, as long as they are both serving their purpose to your own convenient.

The free teaser content may be there for SEO while pre-selling membership.

The free membership collects data from non/not-yet buyers, building a larger list. While, making their content only available at the site forces repeat visits. If they plan to sell ad space etc. this could allow them to charge much higher prices as they'll have that larger list and higher traffic statistics.

As a marketing opp, each time a member logs in they could be redirected to a "free member page" where the owner can place specific ads that won't be shown in "paid members page" (ie. ads for them to finally upgrade to the paid membership), etc.

A membership, even if it's free, may have a higher perceived value than an autoresponder email. Especially if they use a database marketing strategy to "customize" a workout on each member's personal profile page.

The owner can force membership before allowing blog comments to control comment spam. They may also have a social networking plugin that relies on members being logged in to access.

True but some can be configured to grab details from a users database field and pre-fill forms streamlining the checkout process for the end user.

When I think of the convenience of fB Connect I think of Database Marketing. fB, as oliverjones points out, allows you to grab a lot of information beyond name & email from the fB database.
