      Exercise is overated

Ok, as an ex personal trainer instructor (training students to become personal trainers), I was kidding.

It is very important for the physical and mental alertness of the body, though also remember that eating healthily is just as important to ones state of wellbeing.

    • Exercise : from an exercise addict and offline consultant ...

Rules to why exercise (activity) is just like work, and just like life.

      * For those that don't work out substitute exercise with Activity & Movement.
( research proves, genetics most important for long term health. And for those in great shape, we should not sit or be in front of the pc, for extended hours because it's very unhealthy)

      1. use it or lose it - do those business actions that get results or you lose your edge (muscle)

      2. practice (workout) multiple times per week - have to be consistent in your work to improve or you will drop off.

      3. no pain, no gain - to be a success, you must feel failure and grow your professional, psychological, and emotional muscle

      4. gives you energy - making a sale.... getting a new client makes you feel Great!

      5. from nothing to creation for mind, body, and soul - creating muscle tissue from water, creatine, assorted vitamins & minerals, etc.. to something you can see in the mirror... like building your business from nothing to tangible results. you are what you see in the mirror, you are your business.

      6. only way to create -

      A. Direct Involvement of what you want to create. you want a bigger arms, then you have to do arm curls and tricep extensions.
Business = Action, not talk (or the latest and greatest magic bullet)

      B. Repetition = 1 more mile, 1 more set, 1 last rep!
Business = Repeated productive activities that help your bottomline

I think exercise is a must. I try to work out several times a week and usually after I am down with my workout I will cool down in the sauna, steam room or spa area and the ideas will start to flow as I wind down. I have started taking a pen and pad with me, it seems as the sweat flows so do the ideas. I want to make sure I catch them!

Physical exercise raises blood flow to your brain, so you think better mentally.

    My suggestions for good exercises:

    * walking in nature (less stress on your legs & joints compared to running)
    * swimming (less stress on legs or joints compared to running)
    * yoga (energizes your muscles quickly, tones your body & muscles)
    * relaxation exercises (meditation, Tai-Chi, Chi-Gong: to attain a calm mind)

Eat brain food also, like blueberries.

It is not the exercise so much as being concious and intune with your mind and body afterwards. Truthfully you could exercise and still be a fool. A certain boxer going off on his pops comes to mind. Cough cough

I run 3 times a week and I also work out with weights 3 times a week. I think exercise is one of the most important things you can do to keep your body and your mind healthy.

What I don't see mentioned in the comments yet is that you should also be careful not to overdo it. I had a period in my live where I was running every day and lifting weights 5 times a week, needless to say I was burned out after a month of following this routine. I had to sleep +10 hours every night and during the hours I was awake I wasn't very productive either because I was still feeling tired...

Furthermore I also advocate a variety in your exercise program, this keeps your whole body active and will make it less boring for you to keep on exercising multiple times a week. This is ofcourse a personal choice and everybody should seek the optimal frequency and variety in for his own exercise program.

Studies show that most successful people incorporate exercise into their daily routines.

I've been working, consistently, for many years; before exercise and fitness became popular. My friends used to call me "rigid" because I kept to a strict exercise schedule. Now they are getting into it because they see the benefits; especially as you age.

Without actually quoting the dozens of experiments, naturalistic observations, and their results... It is safe to say that exercising helps EVERYTHING. Let me create an example for everyone to understand:

Say there were two of the exact same person living in parallel universes.. Same DNA, same personality, same goals, needs, wants, hobbies, desires, etc.. Replicas of each other..

They both do the same things, but one exercises and the other does not.

Undoubtedly, the one who gets regular exercise will live a much more successful, enjoyable, and more fulfilling life than the one who does not.

Exercise carries over into every aspect of life including (especially) any business.

I don't have time to back this up with references to demonstrate these, and perhaps you don't have time to read them, but if there is ONE thing I will take with me from my degree in psychology, it's that exercise is absolutely VITAL to ones well being.

I know everyone had basically made the same point before I did since I got on here too late but I really must add to this thread because this topic is quite meaningful for me and ideally should be for everyone!

Amen. I love IM, but I HATE the fact that I have to sit all day to do it.

One thing I try to do is 20 minutes of work, followed by 5 minutes of moderate/vigorous exercise. I always come back to my desk with a clearer head after a little burst of activity.

I really feel it when I've just been sitting there without exercising. By the end of the day, my brain feels like mush, I can't focus, and I'm really sore.

          Activity is crucial.

          A. Recent research showing sitting, for people even in excellent health, is not good.

          B. Long Term study shows Genetics more important than exercise.

If you don't exercise, but your grandparents and parents lived a long time, don't beat yourself up....you just have to move someway.

right now I am standing up. I sit, kneel, and stand up throughout the day.

Exercise is one of the most important things you can do to succeed and fulfill your life.

When you exercise you are bursting your energy to allow your body get and storage more energy, when you get more energy you can use it to do things in the day with more quality.

When you finish 30 mins of walking, jogging or play a game of basketball or do some other exercises you feel relief and your body feels something like joy. That's your body giving you the thanks.

I think it depends on the person. I exercise and am active because it makes me feel good. However, in my life, past and present I have known people who were overweight, lazy slobs with bad attitudes and despite that, had success in their chosen endeavors.

What made the difference was MENTAL. They just did not give a crap what anyone else thought and lived life on their own terms.

I read a quote once..."The slower you move, the faster you die".

Our bodies are meant to move. We need to literally step out of the invisible box we all live in nowadays. We are not using our bodies to their full capacity stuck behind either a computer or behind the wheel driving to work. When was the last time you raised your arms? Even if it's a leisurely walk for half an hour, it's important to keep moving somehow.

I read somewhere that if you sit somewhere for too long, your blot will actually start to clot and you get high-blood pressure.

Also, I read study where a rat never exercised, and it's twin did. The twin that did exercise lived like 4 times longer.

Exercise is good. Just jog around the block for 15 minute a day. Or take your pet out every morning.

Great point... diet is also key. No matter how much I'm exercising, if I don't watch what I eat I still feel far from optimal. Also, my exercise performance declines. A good, low fat diet is imperative for being healthy long term.

    Very, very important!

Healthy body = healthy mind, but also exercise improves your mood, focus, productivity and creativity. You sleep better so have more energy throughout the day.

Doesn't need to by pumping iron in the gym though, anything which gets you moving, blood pumping, red, sweaty and breathless works. (Yes, including sex if it is energetic!!)

Wow, I really learnt this the hard way.
As soon as i started a daily exercise routine (nothing fancy, just a brisk 1 hour morning walk), my productivity shot up about twice as much.

Wow! These motivate me to back to the gym and start sweating it out again! It's almost a year now that I haven't exercise and I miss it...There's no better feeling than sweating all those toxins out!

As an Ex-Aeorbics Instructor/Personal Trainer, I can say that the more fit you are physically, the more alert your brain is! Exercise also releases endorphins that make you feel good about LIFE in general. All good stuff!

Health is definitely wealth. The benefits of exercise are countless. And it doesn't require much time. Without a doubt it is a win win kind of situation.

In my opinion exercise is really over rated. More important is the food you take. Foods have the chemicals that can change your mood, can make you super efficient, food can make you sleepy. But of course you need some sort physical activity in your daily routine to stay healthy.
