Too much marijuana? I generally sleep about 5 hours a day. My wife needs eight to nine hours, so I get a lot of me time.

For your sakes I hope that your wife doesn't read the WF.

Why would you not want to spend extra time with your wife?

          Please don't answer that question.

Might be worth consulting with a doctor. Certain things like iron deficiency can cause fatigue and are easy to fix.

Or maybe you're just sleeping too much. Maybe if you cut back an hour or two, you will actually feel less tired...

Now, if 4 hours a day was enough that would be really great. But somehow - I doubt it. When I sleep 4 hours a day (which does happen more often than I'd like) I am REALLY tired.

I would love to see where you saw that. I have seen reports of so many studies on this, and they all come out with something in the range of 7-8 hours or at least 8 hours or at least 7.5 hours. None that I have seen has suggested that getting less than 7 hours is at all healthy.

      Unfortunately.

Rare it is that I get over 7 hours...so I suppose I'll just have to die early.

I've come across previous studies that show the bump in death rate due to lack of sleep is mainly increase in accidents, of which a good portion are automobile accidents. So...as long as you work from home or close to your office, you may very well cancel this out.

Of course, it may mean what I've learned is now out of date!

There have been studies showing that tired drivers are almost as dangerous as drunk drivers, for whatever that's worth as both are equally bad ideas.

There have also been studies that show sleeping 6 hours a night is better then 9 lol.

Frankly, not to get too scientifically inclined on an IM board, but we don't have a clue what goes on while we're sleeping as of yet. That research is really in its infancy as there isn't a clear cut consensus about why we sleep.

Sleep enough to feel energized. Without enough sleep everything suffers. I used to adopt the "sleep when you die" philosophy until I discovered that the quality of my work was garbage and I was a rather irritable dude.

Each person tolerates sleep deprivation differently but it will always catch up with you.

      This.

If you are motivated and passionate about your life then you actually don't need much sleep at all.

Is that what your doctor tells you?

Sleep brings you energy - and therefore MORE passion and happiness into your life. Your mind is sharper, so you're more productive.

Sleep is important and yes lack of sleep could lead to death.

People who do not have 8 hours of sleep are only damaging their health.

I hate working at night - I usually go bed by 1 am and then wake up 9 am which is pretty much alright.

I am off to the gym now

P.S Healthy eating is essential too.

Never let money damage your health.

It's not possible to over sleep as far as your body is concerned. (your boss might have his/er own opinion) When you have slept enough you wake up. Life is simple. It's work that gets complicated.

Here are a few things you could think about:

        # Sleep deprivation has been linked to cancer, diabetes and of course a whole pile of deaths and serious injury due to accidents.

        # Sleep reduces the stress hormone cortisol in the body and the time it takes to do that varies but around 8 1/2 hours is a good goal for most people.

        # In communities deprived of artificial light people sleep on average closer to 9 1/2 to 10 hours a night suggesting our bodies evolved getting that much sleep.

If you need 10 hours of sleep to feel healthy then you should strive to get that.

        # Different people have different levels of alertness at different times of the day.

Some people are more alert in the morning after waking, some are more alert in the evening before sleep.

This is probably a survival strategy. In a tribe if everyone was alert at the same time you would be more vunerable to attack.

        # Bright lights and sunshine can inhibit or stop the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

Sleeping in a room that is as dark as possible is a huge help.

Light in the red spectrum doesn't inhibit melatonin production so if you have a night light or a light you use when you get up in the night to go to the bathroom it helps if it's red.

        # Our bodies run on a 25 hour clock that needs resetting every day otherwise we'll tend to go to sleep one hour later each day.

Things that help reset the clock include exercising first thing in the morning (or when you get up) and getting direct or indirect exposure to sunlight or very bright lights.

        # If you feel sleepy or tend to nod off mid afternoon then you're almost certainly sleep deprived. Get more sleep lol.

I have had trouble sleeping for years, but, I did the wrong thing. I want you to avoid this problem. I started taking P.M.'s, like execdrin, motrin, advil, etc. I got to where the night when I took my last two, I knew I had to go out & pick more up. I know it's done a number on my liver. I had to go cold-turkey like an addict. That was incredible to me. They are just P.M.'s. But, starting to use pills to help you, can cause major problems later on. Buy a tea like chamomile & drink @ night.

Or you could use Melatonin in small doses like 0.5mg or less.

Getting to sleep is linked to a whole pile of lifestyle factors including:

      # Whether you get exercise and bright lights first thing when you wake up.

      # If you exercise during the day (being physically tired helps you sleep).

      # If you exercise or have too much stress close to bed time that can make it difficult for you to fall asleep.

      # Sleeping in a dark room helps enormously (pitch black so you can't see your hand in front of your face is ideal).

      # Dealing with your emotions effectively. Emotional issues can keep you awake. Moving towards a healthier lifestyle, personal, family and work life helps. You could also try self therapies like EFT.

      # Your diet can be a huge factor for various reasons. The sleep hormone melatonin is converted from the feel good hormone serotonin (which is why there's often a link between depression and sleep disorders).

A diet balanced well with low fat protein, good fats, low glycemic fruit and vegetables as carbohydrates can help tremendously.

Some people also experiment with foods inside the above selections that are high in tryptophan...a major precursor for the production of serotonin.

Examples might be almonds and turkey breast.

      # Sexual activity that leads to orgasm can also help induce sleep (now it's sounding a whole lot better right).

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Being that the only real time I have to get focused work done is when my two kids are sleeping at night, I don't get much sleep, but I am working on it. I aim for at least 7 hours but usually end up with about 6 hours a night.

Last summer my husband got laid off and I was freelance writing at the time and I had to kick it into gear so I could make up the difference in money. At that time I was getting at the most 5 hours of sleep. Sometimes I would only get 3 hours and then have to be up with a baby and a toddler all day long. It definitely does affect your health as I was sick three times in three months during that time and that is not the norm for me.

I'll add that to the list...

    1. Saturated fat
    2. Stress
    3. Poor healthcare
    4. Shark attack
    5. Falling coconuts
    6. Plane crash
    7. Fair ground accident
    8. Lightening
    9. Radiation
    10. Terrorist attacks
    11. Using a left handed product when you're right handed (or vice versa)
    12. Snake bites
    13. Food poisoning
    14. Smoking
    15. Cancer
    16. Falling off a ladder
    17. Road accident

...I could go on, but these are some of the more "popular" ones.

In fact, did you know that 20 people die from falling out of bed each year in the UK? You're never safe, even when you're sleeping.

Best to ignore the news, sleep when you feel tired, let your body wake you up when you're not tired, and get on with life whilst you've still got one.

It must be said... why do some people act surprised?

Biology 101 - the brain restores itself while you sleep. The brain doesn't get that restoration, you'll die earlier than necessary.

Another thing, don't let this realization suddenly shock you so much that you constantly mull over years you *might* have lost. All you can really do is learn from it and take better care of your health. They say when it comes to a busy schedule, sleep is often the first thing sacrificed - when in reality it should be the last. What do you prioritize?

I believe sleep is very important, however I usually don't have much. The immediate effect is lack of concentration and bad mood the next day, so there's a trade off for overuse of body.

Moreover, sleep at regular time is important too. Hope all marketer here have good health and be productive.

    • I believe lack of sleep can lead to stess on your body. You body need time to rejuvenate and repair itself and rest. No rest can lead to overstrain and beat your body all up. So yeah - I also heard it can lead to high blood pressure and other problems especially if you work a tough 9-5 job that requires a lot of lifting or is mentally draining.

Huh! I sleep almost 12 hours a day. Would that shorten my life?

According to the article, which you could read, yes it apparently can.

The problem with sleep, nutrition, etc levels is that there is a huge amount of variation among humans. For example, I need about 5-6hrs sleep a night to function fine, while my wife needs at least 8.

Also, sleeping less can be used to counteract some forms of depression.

Sleep is definitely important. Earlier this semester when I had to juggle a full course load along with a 20 hour a week internship, I would average about 4-6 hours of sleep a night...also because I'd still go out during the week. My grades suffered, retaining information when I studied was much harder, and I gained weight easily.

I've noticed that in high school when I averaged about 8-9 hours of sleep a night, my grades were significantly better, I studied more effectively, and I was in the best physical shape of my life (although I didn't drink close to as much as I do now). It just feels a lot easier for me to lose weight with more sleep.

That's why I want to be able to create my own schedule with IM as a career so I can get the rest I need every night and do things when I want to do them.

Oh that is one scary stuff you got there. I heard that oversleeping is dangerous too. I always sleep 5-6 hours a day.

In my opinion if you drink coffee regularly, it's probably a good idea to not drink it around 12 hours before attempting to sleep. Could be very disruptive to ones sleeping patterns if you allow it to go that far.
