Honestly I don't know what you're talking about.

If you're referring to marketers saying "Crushing it"
in their sales videos then you're obviously spending
way too much time watching peoples sales videos.

Also, it's their website and their video so they can
say what they want.

Get over it.

Come on, now, Alexa. By your very definition, the reverse is just as true. No need to say it's some sign of US arrogance. Furthermore, your response implies that the people using these phrases are conscious of their word choices, but I don't think that's necessarily true.

Are you saying that in the UK the phrase "crushing it" means "to not do well"? How are the phrases used in an opposite way? Examples?

Even IF (and it's a big if) it was true for the tiny fraction of words given as examples, there are many more words where this isn't the case.

The emphasised pronoun clearly refers to the word "business," not the word "niche" in the parenthesised prepositional phrase.

And if you're killing your business, that's bad on both sides of the Atlantic.

But when you talk about "Bob is totally killing the iPhone niche," I think that's ambiguous on both sides of the Atlantic.

Bob might be destroying the iPhone niche with questionably business practices, in such a way that it will no longer be commercially viable. For example, forced continuity and bad MLM have "killed" the **** berry niche - chances are you can't make any money in it and shouldn't even try.

In the same way, Bob might be succeeding dramatically in the iPhone niche. Several applications for the iPhone are basically "an attractive button that makes an amusing noise," and they're "killing the niche" by "making a killing" over and over again - several app developers have basically thrown dozens of "push the button and hear the noise" applications into the AppStore, and for some stupid reason people keep buying them.

My two cents, anyway.

I bought "Crushing It" by Gary Vaynerchuk and every time he used that phrase, I honestly didn't know what the hell he was talking about.

As Alexa points out, to British eyes it implies that you're destroying something. Maybe in Britain, the book should have been re-named "I'm doing jolly well!"

You may have a point about cultural differences. I for one used to get confused when people said "taking the piss". For the life of me I couldn't figure out who in their right mind would steal a urine sample.

I know a couple of guys who are trying to crush the market. I've heard of crush videos, those are really gross. Wasn't there a drink named Crush? I forget. Anyway, it's easy to get negative associations with words or phrases, at least in my experience. It's like when you get a song stuck in your head, it will go away in time.

No seriously, these kind of terms and words can be found is so many books. Just this morning I flipped to a very old, physical, book. It's around 15 years old and has most of the words marketers use in it. Including the "crushing".

I won't use "crushing it", but not because somebody is tired of it and thinks they can make an edict from on high that bans its use.

Funny.

Anyway, the reason I won't use it is because it doesn't sound natural for me; it's not something I would normally say.

While some people may not like the term "cashing in", I do. In fact, when I try to come up with alternatives, they just don't sound right.

But, to tell people to stop using a phrase because you're sick of it just sounds like heavy-handed whinging to me.

(OOPS! Did I just mix American and British English?)

Our language is so diverse and endlessly interesting that there are always other ways to say things, such as "cashing in" and "crushing it", but so what? Use the words you want - whether they be overused, British, American, SMS, slang, or whatever.

Also, I don't recall seeing or hearing the phrase "crushing it" until I read this post. Guess I'm just lucky.

To be fair, I can also hear "killing it" being used in that way in the US. It all comes down to context, and I'm assuming it could, in the proper context, be understood as "experiencing great success" in the UK as well.

I started a job in a place and soon started hearing something I've
never encountered anywhere else before. Someone was talking
and said, "That gave me the total ass."

I was new there, so I just made a mental note. lol. Then I heard
other people using it.

I had the ass.
That gave me the ass.

To have the ass meant they were angry about something. I left that
place about 4 years ago and have never heard that expression since.
