Question for some Offline WF Oldtimers.

Hello all,

I am trying to find a thread that I read years ago. If anyone has an idea of where it is could you tell me? Here is what I remember about the thread:

I think the title was something like "Out of work dad..." Or "Broke Father..."

I though the the person who started the thread had the last name of "Sprague"

It was a thread about ho he was out of work and started and online directory. I think he may have interviewed the people who listed their business in the directory.

This thread may not be in the Offline forum since it could be from back before there was an offline forum on WF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I guess nobody remembers it.

It was back in the days of AP, Dexx, Claude, Kanigan, and so many others. I'd say about 2008.

Could it have been John Spangler? He references his "Jobless Dad" thread here:

Warriorforum deleted that thread. You can find it on the waybackmachine.org: https://web.archive.org/web/20090115...recession.html

The thread Frank linked to was the meatier one.

Hell yes it is still relevant. 11 years ago John Spangler, out of sheer need, started talking to LOCAL BUSINESSES about helping them...

        GET MORE CUSTOMERS...

via...a web site, maximized and kept up to date.

But he did have to ACTUALLY talk to people, that most terrifying of all events to many Warriors. He called, made an appointment...at first just to do a simple survey.

Then he would MEET the business owner, OMG, he did FACE-TO-FACE (HOW brave he must have been).

What John Spangler did 11 years ago, and shared his success a few years later, and God bless guys like him and Savidge4 who did a similar thing recently with the eBay thread in Warrior Path section...

These guys give a detailed explanation, a guide to HOW TO do it.

And today, April 2019. There are still people who are going OUT THERE, talking to people, making sales in the real (what we call the OFF LINE) world with an evergreen market of ready buyers with money to spend.

Help small businesses get more customers. Keep the ones they have. Increase profits or reduce costs...

And you too could write one of those helpful threads.

Thanks to Frank Donovan for finding this gem buried deep in the WF "glory days".

        GordonJ

PS Sure, most WF members want to do IM in their jammies from their computers, but when it gets desperate, like some of the longest threads here discuss...nothing beats a little OUTSIDE action and talking and HELPING people out. Note John Spangler never once got bitten, shot or stabbed for his bravery of "talking to people" (sarcasm intended).

You got it! I have been tickling a thought of a "Unique" twist on the boring old Business Directory and this thread was one that planted the seed many years ago. It's been cooking like a fine stew for quite a few years. Finally I think the technology has gotten to where I can pursue it.

There were several gems I can use in those threads. Tonight's project - to read them and cut and paste the relevant ideas into a document.

Keep your stick on the ice and whack that goal in,

from JohnSpanglers original post "So I needed a way in the door so I started contacting the businesses who were advertising and asked if I would be able to interview them because I wa starting a new local website that would highlight local companies." This and variants there of, are S O powerful. It is literally selling, without selling. I would say 9 times out of 10 the prospect starts pushing towards the sale - and all you have to do is LISTEN, and answer the questions.

A variant of this I use is an interview for research... try to stay niche specific, say thrift stores or something.. and interview 3 or 4 and identify the pains... hardest to sell best to sell... best days of the week... worst hours...

Then compile all this new found knowledge and set a sales appointment, start listing off the pains and how YOU can help. Sell that 1 client.. and a month or 2 later create a white paper based on the interviews, and the application of your services and send/ hand deliver this to the prospects you "interviewed" and see what happens from there.

To any beginner: Learn to become a great salesperson, be proud of it.
      Just sell, sell, sell...

Edit: I would agree that an interview with business owners is a great strategy, especially for someone new to sales or someone who doesn't want to be seen as a sales person. If nothing else, you'll learn a bit about your prospects...

I have conversations with business owners and some decide to buy from me, without me even trying to sell them.

And I don't have to watch the words I use or the tone of my voice or even (gasp) wear a suit...

A bit unfair... To be honest there is NOTHING non salesy about what I do... It is a VERY calculated process.. and to be honest not sure I would suggest this to a newbie.. because it is a PROCESS. Keep in mind in MY process I get interviews and then create a sale in the same vertical so I have a subject for the white paper.

what is it we sell? I sell SOLUTIONS... how do you understand solutions if you dont know the problem? Part of my PROCESS is getting first hand knowledge of issues and pain points. At this point I am not selling, I am educating myself to a specific niche or industry or whatever. More specifically at a localized level. Pains in Texas may not be the same as in Washington State or West Virginia for that matter, and it could be a whole other kind of Pain in Australia or Germany.

So I have a 3 step process.. I have the education phase, I then sell based on that education to a client, and extract that experience and knowledge into a white paper. I then deliver the white paper to the people that educated me, and that turns into a direct response sales piece. Is that really for a beginner? not really - they should stick to cold calling and cold walk ins!
