Using a Book to prospect

So I had an interesting conversation with a friend over skype today and he was asking me if I had any experience doing this. I don't but I was wondering if anyone else has.

What I am talking about is publishing a book (self publishing using creatspace/lulu/diggypod/ect) and using this as a prospecting tool. Mainly by simply walking into a business asking for the owner and giving him/her a copy saying:

"Hey, I own a marketing company here in (city) and I just wrote a new book on how small businesses can use the internet and mobile to get more customers and I thought it might give you a couple marketing ideas. Oh and by the way if you ever want to get some more customers in here give me a call!"

From createspace a 150 page book costs about $3 each including shipping/handeling. For $3 thats instant credibility and a valuble gift with no pressure on the business owner. Great way to establish yourself as an expert and start a conversation too.

Another way you could do this is grab a long PLR and just publish the 25-30 page report..though I think a real book would get a better response.

This could also be a cool thing to throw down in a sales pitch/meeting, "oh by the way I just got my latet book published on text message marketing heres a free copy." Thats some strong credibility!

Like I said I haven't done this myself but it sounds promising, especially for anyone looking to establish instant credibility.

If anyone has done anything like this I would enjoy hearing your take on how it worked!

PS: Please do not respond with "oh why don't you just give them a link to download an ebook", an ebook would not work with this, it does not the have near the same value as a physical book that you hand to the prospect.

Why waste time and money writing a book when you have tons of plr reports that you can give to prospects and just print them out and present in an attractive folder.

The amount of credibility that you would gain to presenting them with a book compared to presenting them with a report would be so small it wouldn't even matter.

Why not bundle the PLR`s into a ebook? Just chapter it out for each different PLR in the industry your in.. I`m sure this would work.

  • This is a really neat idea. I'm very active on another forum and generally folks come up with "new and exciting" ideas that are fairly boring, but for the cost on this it seems like it would make sense.

I'm an insurance agent and one of the things we'll do to help with the "weight test" is overnight folks applications (if we're not doing it f2f), not because it's particularly time sensitive, but because it's something that helps create a sense of urgency. Having a published book would really help with that; I guess I didn't realize how inexpensively they could be printed.

    Thanks for sharing the idea!

A physical book is a powerful marketing tool.
