Leading with Web Design....??

I am trying to lead with web design, with the goal of upselling SEO and other services later.

This thread by James inspired me to give web design as a lead-in a try, by offering free demos.
http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...t-website.html

He mentions using Places Scout to scrape local businesses who do not have a website currently.

Are there any other solutions out there to quickly scrape whether or not a business has a website or not?

How about any other ideas on how to get in the door leading with web design?

I have these...

direct mail - ugly yellow post cards which tend to get my attention in my mail ,when they arrive with a biz opp on them

cold calling - there is always cold calling on the phone and in person.

autodialer - I do have this, which I plan on testing, offering a free demo

contact forms - I have never seen more awful attorney websites out there, but they all seem to have contact forms to send a short and sweet message manually, or even create a BOT to hit contact forms with a message in mass.

Linkedin- Join open groups on Linkedin, which then enables you to direct message decision makers.

Google search - "yahoo web hosting" "seattle" or "yahoo web hosting" "roofers", or "website under construction" "orlando" or "roofers" etc.

I have Sean Lowery's Offline Business Wordpress Themes - Designer Wordpress Themes for offline businesses, which are very impressive.

Any other insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Why are you trying to limit yourself to the group of people that DON'T CARE about having a website?

What seems like the better qualified prospect?

A.) Someone that doesn't have a website but has been in business for X amount of years.

    or

B.) Someone who already understands the importance of having a website?

I have found, in my own statistics, 90% of people with websites are unhappy with their website.

That's my experience as well. There's a substantial market in 'remodeling' existing sites. Looking for businesses without a site who have been around quite awhile isn't going to be any more productive.

If the business just opened recently that's another story.

Thank you for sharing your insight based on experience.
I will certainly re-evaluate my thinking on this strategy to ensure I am going
down the right path. That does make perfect sense.

I typically hang up when an auto dialer is used. There is a tell tale pause as it connects.

Info USA provides a way for you to get the info on NEW businesses, right? I'm not sure how great the quality is, though... Last year I found a Fiverr gig that resold Info USA information. I can't find it anymore, but I'd imagine with a little digging, you could find a less expensive source for this information.

    SCHEMA.ORG + GEOTAGGING + KML + PUBLISHERSHIP + so much more...

I would try contacting businesses that you want to work with and asking them what they want rather than contacting them and telling them what they need.

Does your doctor call you and tell you that you need to start exercising more?

No. You go in because you don't feel well and he tells you that your cholesterol is triple what it needs to be and if you don't start exercising yesterday you are going to die.

So thats a super extreme example but you get where I'm coming from... what if the business you talk to isn't interested in a website but they have $10K set aside and have actively looking for someone to write a marketing plan for them?

Just something to think about and test.
