The people who are most copied tend to be the most influential. So when you see lots of people doing similar things it's probably because they're getting information 2nd hand on what has worked well....

I don't know how much he qualifies, but one name that comes to mind is Travis Sago. He coined the term bum marketing (well, actually I think he said that it was his wife who first called it that...)....
