Does my File names Structure have an effect on search engine optimization?
#effect #engine #file #names #optimization #search #structure
  • Depends what you mean exactly but there are two schools of thought.

The most common is that file structure (in the url) has no real affect but that shorter URLs perform better so keeping things tiddy is the way to go.

The second is that Google very specifically adheres to following file tree structure and therefore not relating associated documents by a real or virtual subfolder is a mistake.

Personally, I have done both and have found that has long as associated documents are linked together, subfolder association isn't a requirement for getting double and triple listings in the SERPS.

*However - when said documents aren't linked, double listings have been achieved through subfolder association alone, so I do think there is something to be said for having a solid file structure in place... but it seems that it can be replaced by cross linking.

Yes, file structure without a doubt does affect SEO.

This is one of the ways to get Mega Sitelinks (example screenshot below). When you have an internal page with Mega Sitelinks it obviously has greater potential to increase SERP CTR than a single link.
