    You're mostly right. Most backlinks people create for their own sites are low quality. However,

    I created a link today from one of my mortgage sites to another of my mortgage sites. That link is not low quality, not as good as getting a link from Google's homepage, but not low quality.

    There are exceptions, like getting links from truly private PBNs or websites that you own, but generally speaking, if you can place the link yourself and the other website did not have to make a conscious decision to link to you, it is almost always a low quality link.

    I think the best way I can answer your question is to start by answering the opposite question - What is a High Quality Backlink?

    My perfect backlink would be embedded in a Relevant article on a Relevant website, with high Authority, and, ideally, lots of Traffic. The link should be Naturally Given, and the site should be known for strict Editorial Standards.

    Let's break that down:

    Relevance: The subject of the website, and the page the link appears on should be the same as, or closely related to, your page.

    Authority (Page Rank): Google measures the authority of every web page based on how many other pages link to it, and the authority of the pages that link to it. They call this measure PageRank - but they don't share this score with us. Various third parties have come up with their own scores to estimate authority. For example PA (Page Authority) and DA (Domain Authority) created by Moz. Google doesn't use PA or DA - they're just estimates.

    Editorial Standards: Some websites (SEO Friendly Directories, Article Directories, Blog Comments, Forum Profiles for example) will give a link to anyone that signs up. Others, only to decent quality sites. And a few (eg New York Times) have very high editorial standards and are difficult to get a link from. The harder it is to get a site to link to you, the more Google is likely to value the link - because it's a better indication of the quality of your site.

    Naturally Given: Many links that you can go out and get yourself, eg links that you buy, or exchange, or barter for, are outside Google's webmaster guidelines. Google values links that are given naturally by editors and website owners, rather than those you had a hand in creating for yourself.

    Traffic: Links aren't just for Google. If you can get a link, on a relevant page, on a high-traffic website - it will drive targeted visitors directly to your website when people click the link. If you focus on trying to get links that drive relevant traffic - more often than not you'll be getting links that Google values as well.


    Ok - so that's a high quality link. So back to your question - what's a low quality link?

    Basically, the exact opposite of the high quality link:

    Links from sites with low authority (i.e. they don't have many links from quality sites) aren't worth much.

    Links from sites with low (or no) editorial standards, and links you can create yourself are usually worthless:

    Think about it - Google uses links to determine the quality of a page - because they show other people's opinion about the page (i.e. it's a page worth linking to). But if you can create the link to your page yourself - that doesn't tell Google anything about the quality of the page - so they don't count it.

    Links from sites and pages with little or no real traffic.

    Examples of low quality links: Forum profiles, blog comments, SEO directories, article directories, link exchange schemes etc.

    Before you eradicate low quality backlinks, the first step is to identify which sites are actually linking you back. Low quality backlinks can come from varied sources such as,
    • links from non existant webites
    • spammy links.
    • backlinks from poor quality webpages
    • link from a webiste which is suffering a google penalty.
    • links to duplicate texts.
    In addition to this, backlinks from sites with low domain authority or from websites having limited number of webpages can also be detrimental to your webiste's overall Google ranking.

    Every links you created by yourself were low quality links, actually for most seoers, high quality links are not easy to make, only when you have great content and other high PR sites re-post your original post to their site then you will get one! BTW, do not care bout high or low, do-follow with no-follow links mix will be better and natural to search engine, just remember the rule: link is a link

    Those backlinks which you gain through off-page activities from low DA and low PR sites are low-quality backlinks. They are not harmful to SEO but still you should opt more for high PR ones.

    Any link that you can make easily is low quality back link. And i am assuming that you are into low quality links from long time
    Forum links are considered to be mid quality and low quality based on from where you made them.
    All submission links are low quality so be aware of manual submission and focus more on guest posting and natural links.
