Is duplicate content bad for SEO?

I was told that search engines don't like duplicate content. I was submitting my blog articles to Ezine articles but was told that's a bad idea.

Is it a good idea to submit my posts to StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious and Squidoo.? Is that considered duplicate content and will it hurt my SEO?

Submitting blog posts to the aforementioned is fantastic!
Use the blog plug-in from squidoo to auto update your
    posts on a squidoo lens.

I think you answered your own question. If the duplicate content
that you talk about was bad, then ezine would not exist.

Duplicate content refers to the same content on different pages of your site. This is a very long read but you will find a lot of it useful: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...eza-first.html

Make sure that Google indexes your blog article before you submit the article to a place like ezine. This ensures that they won't penalize your blog for duplicate content.

You can use bookmark sites to promote your blog, but do not submit every post, that will be spammy and tend to be punished.

Why would anyone want duplicate content on a site? Its just being lazy and in general down grading the quality of the site. There are no short cuts in SEO, build your site properly - without duplicate content for the sake of your engine ranking and quality of your site (both will effect the performance of your site!)
