Hi all,

I've been trying to re-design my site into a silo structure but every once in a while I am finding a post that I feel belongs in two different silos. For instance in this fictional example:

- website is based on golf equipment and I have sections devoted to drivers, irons, putters, bags, and brands: nike, titleist, etc
- I have a post on nike golf irons

Is it ok to put it in the Nike silo along with the irons silo? Or should I just choose one particular silo?

Thanks!

    I would say just put it into 1 section, also use tags for your website so people can search for 'nike golf irons' and find it through a variety of tags. personally i would say it belongs in irons and then its brand.

    Irons --> Nike, adididas (etc) --> 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron

    hope this helps

    Is the site an article type site or a storefront site?

    If it's articles you need to decide what your root keyword is that you want to target, I assume that the root keyword is golf irons, in that case I would use the Nike page as a supporting page. You'll still be able to rank the Nike page, but unless you have enough Nike related pages to support the keyword Nike golf irons as a category/silo then it's not going to be much help.

    • golf irons
      • Nike golf irons
      • Titleist golf irons
      • Wilson golf irons
      • etc...

    The page titles above are examples, I would be more creative than that on a live site. You don't necessarily need to stuff the root keyword in every single supporting page <title>.

    Really it all depends on which keywords are the most important to you, obviously the more themed content you can create, the better.

    I always suggest that you stay as focused as possible on the root keyword for each silo, still at the same time you need to include additional themed keywords which will help show Google your tightly themed group of pages are laser focused on a single subject (golf irons).

    Thanks to you both. Yes it is a difficult decision. Right now I have these articles (not e-commerce) being linked from separate top level silos. In my case, the keywords "golf irons", and "nike golf equipment" would be a similar search count so it's hard to decide if it would be better to go with:

    Option A:
    Nike golf equipment
    -> Nike golf irons
    -> Nike golf driver
    -> Nike golf shoes

    Option B:
    Golf Irons
    -> Nike Golf Irons
    ->Wilson Golf irons
    -> etc.

    I am thinking I stand more of a chance when I go for the non-brand name keywords but am not 100% sure.
