I think Kompozer is the easiest software to creating a website. Do you know any ada software which is free and downloadable easier to use other than Kompozer?

Have anyone ever tried Zen Cart, My first site I ever built was a Zen Cart, back in 2005 when my merchant host site got so high I couldn't afford it. Wordpress and Zen Cart are My sites, they are the easiest for me. I tried Joomla, and Drupal but couldn't get the hang of it.

I use WordPress for some sites, and Dreamweaver (not free) for others. Though I've never tried it, I've heard good things about NVU. On their FAQ page it says "Nvu is designed to be extremely easy to use. This makes it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML, CSS or web coding." Maybe it's worth a try - and it's FREE.

I have been a hand coder for many years but after working with WP lately there is a lot to be said about it.

Here is a WP site I just did for a country music band that uses All "Pages" (not posts) for it's content.
Hoosier Highway - Country Music Performance Band - Book this Country Music Band for your next live event

Here is one that I am currently working on for myself that uses all "Posts" for the site. (Except for the Home Page that uses a "Page" for content)
Download PC and Mac Video Games | Great PC Game Downloads
Even though I did a lot of modifications it would have taken much longer to program in the functionality from scratch. Not to mention importing over 1500 pages worth of data and having it render correctly.
One thing is certain, you never want to reinvent the wheel imho.

I guess it comes down to what the website will be.
Do you want a bunch of cool gadgets and plug-ins?
Then WP is the way to go.

If the site is static content then notepad+ and a little html knowledge will work fine.

Microsoft visual studio 2008 is the very best software for web designing. VS 2008 brings along the Split view which allows us to view both the HTML source and the Design View at the same-time, and easily make changes in any of the views. As shown in the image below, as we select a tag in code view, the corresponding elements/controls are selected in design view.

For building a wordpress site, what's recommended or used--the admin panel or a site builder like site builder. If a site builder, what's recommended? Sitebuilder was recommended to us by our hosting service, but we are having difficulties and now wondering if we should go back and work with the admin panel. What do you suggest?

    Thanks, Randy

  • Profile picture of the author KathyK
I'd go back and work directly with wordpress. Sitebuilder isn't really made to work with wordpress, no matter what your hosting service thinks.

As to what to use, it really depends what kind of site you want. WP is kind of overkill for a 3 page site. Komposer/Dreamweaver, etc will do fine for that sort of thing.

If you are going to end up adding posts/pages often, WP is the way to go. (Unless you need a serious BIG CMS - in which case, Drupal and Joomla are the two big freebies)

I will agree that both of these are top notch options however they are mutually exclusive. You can not do anything on a Wordpress site using .ASP.net because Wordpress is built With PHP and any Windows server running thr .net framework isn't going to have any idea what to do with a PHP page. and visa versa any Linux server running the apache web server and PHP interpreter is going to be clueless about any aspx page

I've used Joomla for years, as well as Wordpress but I found that Wordpress is more formalized as a Blog with extra modules, and I found Joomla to have a lot of extra source code. Both are good as you have an excellent community.

I'm a web-developer of 15+ years, and My customers really wanted to be able to edit their websites easily and quickly - so I designed my own CMS which allows unlimited pages, comes with a drag and drop interface, easily upload movies, images, etc. Took me about four years and half a house, but now I can offer my customers a complete mobile compatible website for free.

Joomla offers the same thing, except what you've got to do is install the modules and then update the modules on a regular basis. That's one of the problems with it - also it's very difficult for someone that's not extremely web-savvy to use. Wordpress is simple to use if you're looking to run a Blog. But again it's not a web-engine it's a blog. but it's a good place to start if you're just starting out.

If anyone needs more info - PM me and I'll be glad to help you out.. Happy Developing!

Play around DW using ready made templates and learn some CSS. You ll soon see that the results you ll achieve using DW are far better than any other software.

As for Photoshop you dont need to know everything to get started. Some pretty standard buttons will do most of the jobs for you..

Wordpress is not web development software. It is a blog software. Basically a website in a box. Dreamweaver is a web authoring or development software though a pretty poor one. This site NET2rd Home was built using Microsoft's Visual Studio Express edition (FREE) It is the best authoring software you can get. The site began as an empty file, i.e. no pages, no template, empty directory. You have to build everything yourself. Wordpress on the other hand starts with a basic site design/layout, complete with navigation and all sorts of widgets. For most people here or people interested in internet marketing building a site from scratch can take a lot of time. Time that could be better used marketing your site. For this reason I would recommend something like Wordpress. The site is already built, all you have to do is customize it to your needs.

BTW the net2rd site was never finished and I haven't done anything with it in a very long time but it doeas serve as an example of what I'm talking about here.

For ease of use and getting the job done quick with lots of flexibility, I would go for either Xara's Web Designer 6, or Serif's WebPlus X4. I use both. Shop around and you can get either at a pretty good discount.

WordPress is superior in combination with some good plugins IME, but it may not be the best tool for every site. I'm also looking at hooking up with iThemes Builder, looks like a nice product for website development. I also use Flexsqueeze for WordPress, which is great product for WordPress marketing sites.

my vote goes to XsitePro - really simple and it packages up your entire site, unlike wordpress. For example one of my hosting services went belly-up and I am going to have to re-create sites somewhere else. With XsitePro it is just a matter of changing the nameservers, then upload from XsitePro - that's it.
With wordpress you also have to constantly backup (and in this case move) a separate database which if you don't have then you are SOL. That's the way I understand wp works, anyway.

I thought bluevoda was easy until I met Wordpress at first I thought it was super complicated then I realized it was the bomb. It is a program that is sent from the heavens.

I love Dreamweaver - have been using it since 8 and it was a Macromedia software. Only things I don't like that Adobe has done is that they immediately stop letting you get the older versions off their site once they update AND their customer service stinks compared to what Macromedia used to offer.

Haven't gone all the way to cs5 as I'm still on cs3 - not sure if I'm wanting to upgrade yet.

Still have a bunch I'm still learning on cs3 - really wish they'd slow down on making updates. Some of us slow pokes are having trouble keeping up...

For ease of use I don't think you can look much past Artisteer, it's a complete CMS design suite, simple to use and you can export your template in Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress and Blogger formats - It comes with a great range of highly customisable templates or you can build your own from scratch.

I've also had alot of success with XSitePro which again is loaded with customisable templates, it has a really usefull SEO analysis feature to help you get the most out of your site before it goes live.

My vote is for WordPress as it is easy to add to or edit. All you need to do is find a theme that you like that is easy to use and there are lots of free and paid themes around and lots of YouTube videos around with tutorials.

Tip: if your site comes out looking like everything is misplaced then check your widget area as you might have accidentally put widgets that belong in the sidebar in your header area.

The best easiest software to build any site is CMS (content managing system) software. There are many CMS out there : Wordpress, Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, XOOPS, Zikula, Mambot and a lot more but the best three that most people find popular and easy to use is Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal. For me I think Joomla is the best and the reason is:

    1. Easy to use admin panel.
    2. Easy component, plug-in, module and theme install or manage.
    3. There is lot of free and paid extensions available for Joomla in the JED.
    4. Most of template design for Joomla is well professional and you can find thousand of the freely on the internet.
    5. Joomla is so widely use that you can find information regarding Joomla almost anywhere. You can also hire someone to help you in develop your site easier.
    6. Joomla is also secure but there is one drawback of joomla is some of its extension use a lot of memory.
    7. Joomla have a built in user management which is not that good right now but it will be better once version 1.6 release.
    8. Joomla also have a good built in SEO function (SEF rewrite). It's not that You rather want to get an extension call Joomsef which work a lot better then the built in function.

Hope this will help you in choosing your CMS.

      hi there.

Has anyone tried Xara? I used it to build a few sites and its really easy to use. It works a lot like Photoshop as well so it helped me to navigate the program and design the site because of my Photoshop background. It's not free software, but you do have a trial period, and its actually inexpensive if you compare it to Dreamweaver's pricing. After designing the imagery I wanted to use in Photoshop, I merely imported it all into Xara and et voila. Plus, it allows you to add all sorts of widgets as well from media to social networks to shopping carts.

Well, it all depends on what you want the website for.

Personally, I prefer the freedom of a good old text editor but being a crazy Mac person, I use Taco HTML Edit ( Taco HTML Edit - The premier HTML editor for Mac OS X )
      and CSSEdit ( MacRabbit - CSSEdit - Web 2.0 in Style )

      I love RapidWeaver
Web Design Software for Mac - RapidWeaver - Overview

I've used Weebly to create quick easy free websites for small businesses, landing pages, etc. the fact that I can make JQuery work there, and easily customize their templates by editing the the HTML/CSS is really nice. They also now automatically format for a mobile layout.

and for a big project, Joomla, if necessary. Drupal has a steep learning curve and while powerful is a bit like Linux in nature.

but since recently working with iThemes Builder, and some great plugins including a mobile plugin, I'm slowly being won over by WordPress.

Depends what you're going to use the site for:

If it's just a salesletter page with a link to a payment processor (something you're selling via ClickBank, say) then a simple HTML page is all you need. You can build one with free software like NVU and put together the header and graphics yourself using software like Photoshop or hire a designer to do it for you.

If you're putting together a blog or an article site then WordPress is the way to go. For anything else I'd use a CMS program like Joomla. The great things about these last two programs are:
    • They're free
    • There are lots of (mostly free) templates
    • Most hosting packages include them, and they can be installed with just a few clicks.

    Just my two pence .

    Hi,

I think you can use Content management system for developing your website. There are lot of cms available. You can use Drupal, it'll be fine.Drupal is a CMS that is written in PHP and it is used by many different types of Drupal website services as their as a back end. However the Drupal CMS is SEO Friendly it can't do better in the search engines, by adding few modules in your Drupal sites, your sites can easily get higher rate in search engines. In other words, Drupal makes it easy to practice good SEO.

Wordpress, you can get up a blog up in minutes, for a regular website, you are better off spending some money on premium themes, some of the plugins can be very useful including for SEO. Very popular these days.

Dreamweaver, as someone that did a lot of programming with this back before Macromedia was bought by Adobe, I can't recommend this to anyone that doesn't already know it. It's got a lot of legacy gunk in it and it produces really old fashioned html code. Sure, use it if you are on a corporate team like a friend of mine that's part of a team that handles the websites for a major airline who has the money to buy the top support package. But for someone just starting out in freelance, really? you would recommend this big overgrown mess ?
Much better off to go with something free like KompoZer or perhaps Nvu. Really better off using some of the elegant HTML/CSS editors out there to produce good clean reusable code.

Joomla's only saving grace is that it's easier than Drupal which isn't saying much. Most often useful for sites with thousands of pages and with non-tech people adding content regularly. Yes, it's free but there is a learning curve and you are really better off to get going quickly by spending some money for premium themes like those here Joomla Templates, Drupal Themes, WordPress Themes and phpBB3 Styles - RocketTheme (not an affiliate link).

      just my two cents.

I couldn't disagree more. Have you looked at Dreamweaver produces ? tables everywhere. When I view the source of a website, I can immediately tell if it's the dated html crap that Dreamweaver produces. The only reason many web developers use dreamweaver is either the company they work for bought or they don't really know any better or just because it's been around a long time and they are used to it and too lazy to learn something better.

Hi, There are many software available on the internet. I have tried many of them. So far the best I have seen is dreamweaver. But it is not free or cheap. You may not need this software of you use wordpress / any other CMS software.

Whether you go with Kompozer, my personal favorite, or WP, which is blogging platform, you will still need some good tutorials on both.
They are both very easy to use and user friendly, but you will need to learn.

And by the way NVU is just an old name for Kompozer.
You can simply go with free websites like wix, drag and drop.
However, if you want to own content on your site and blog i recommend that you build your own.

I think most CMS such as wordpress, joomla or drupal is far more easier than using a HTML editor. Plus the finished product is far more better and easier to maintain. I used Kompozer originally before going onto Joomla design and well once you are over the first hurdle of menu creation and template design its straight forword and easy to design. Programs like Kompozer are kind of out dated and are liable to be outdated a few years from now.

If you just design a web site or a web page then you can do that by dreamweaver.
Or if you want to set a whole site using a tool then you can do that by using wordpress or joomla.
These both are very strong cms.

Ton of suggestions here...and I've learned that there is a difference between a content management system and website building software...but I haven't learned what the difference is. After viewing this thread, I'm still confused about which way to go for creating a professional website.

Let's say I want a site that has pages with information and links, but I also want to be able to sell products. What is the best option? Keep in mind that I'm new and relatively inexperienced. I need something that's simple enough to learn and modify, but still strong enough to present a quality website. Is it Wordpress, Joomla, Dreamweaver, or what? Is it necessary to combine any of these in order to get everything I want or can it all be done with one or the other?

Yeah, what you're looking for is Wordpress. Design software like Dreamweaver requires that you know how to code webpages. And if you plane to get very tricky it means you need to be able to do some programming. Wordpress has a huge support community and you can get a lot of very tricky plugins that do a lot of very high end stuff.

WordPress is the most easiest option for users having zero programming skills. For developing web applications for hobbies, WordPress is a good option but it is advisable to not use WordPress for developing professional website. While developing WordPress applications do not use outdated plugins because outdated plugins are the cause of security vulnerabilities in the WordPress applications.

I use the help of some free website templates and Webstarts website builder. It is very easy, you can do some basic websites this way pretty fast and you don't have to pay any money for it. But if you need some more reliable and complex websites, I would not recommend this method
