SEO - What is a contextual Link?

Posted 05-26-2009 at 12:02 AM by megaresp

A contextual link is one in which the clickable text is made up of a keyword phrase you want to obtain a page one listing for in Google.

For example, I'm personally interested in the phrase lead generation. I attempt to secure as many contextual links back to my main site's homepage as I can.

A contextual link can only work if it links to a page primarily about the keyword phrase. For example, the phrase perspex furniture should link to a page about furniture made from perspex.

Do you ever get traffic from these links, or are they just for SEO purposes? I ask because I've always found that they're great for SEO, but I get absolutely zero direct traffic from these links.

My objective is SEO, but yes I do get traffic. In fact, one article I wrote in 2007 is still averaging one visitor per day.

I find that I can't really predict how an article will go, but the following formats work quite well when it comes to sending visitors...
    • Case Studies based on real cases (probably because they demonstrate ability)
    • Articles about SEO tend to send me visitors
    • An article that links to a follow-on article on my site works well
