There are many questions here in the forum concerning WordPress SEO. I'm going to take up the challenge of posting helpful tips through use of a series of posts on the topic.

One question which seems to generate much discussion with search engine optimization is use of cache and compression plugins. It would take many posts to dig into each plugin as thoroughly as need be however, before ever seeking to use either, there are some things you can do to aid website load time.

For those who may not know - slow site load time will make the difference between a Page #1 ranking in search within your respective keyword markets and essentially search engine oblivion.

I don't put that forth because someone told me load time matters but because over the years I've tested this theory, tracked data and measured results to verify this is in fact, true. Before going any further, I want to encourage all warriors to never accept what others, even professing experts tell you as fact.

This isn't to impugn their expertise nor mine but many SEO 'urban legends' pop-up on the Internet most of which are totally invalid.

There are many opinions on what a great site load time is varying from 2 - 3.1 seconds. What can you do before even seeking compression software?

The following are tips and strategies that will increase website load time before plugins are ever installed:
  • Hosting all multimedia assets on a sub-domain and importing to your main site.
  • Hosting videos off-site and importing embed code.
  • Reducing unnecessary flash components
  • embedding website banners and advertisements as opposed to hosting
  • utilizing 'no index no follow' tags for pages not necessary to the sales process
  • only posting relative comments and smashing the spam!
  • Only using sliders when absolutely necessary.
Of course many things can be added to that list but the point is - thoroughly examined every area of your website to reduce unnecessary baggage.

I once saw a movie where airplane passengers insisted the pilot attempt to take off even though all were aware there was too much luggage in the cargo hold.

The plane sluggishly lumbered down the runway and wasn't able to lift off because of the excess weight. Websites with too much baggage are no different. You may have everything you'd like on them but the excess weight will never allow it to take off!

Once these tips are used along with several others, then it is time to seek compression and cache plugins.
